The Bach Choir of Pittsburgh (BCP) was founded in 1934 to perform works of Johann Sebastian Bach exclusively. Under the leadership of Conductor and Artistic Director Thomas W. Douglas, the Choir continues to evolve from a narrowly-focused ensemble to a larger, more inclusive choir that performs major choral works by composers from the Renaissance through the contemporary period.
BCP is one of the oldest musical groups in southwestern Pennsylvania, and has been a vital part of the local artistic, musical and social culture. BCP differentiates itself from other choirs in the region by creatively captivating audiences through innovative performances in unique venues, such as a space-themed “Messiah” complete with projections and a soprano ascending a ladder to sing, to a performance among the military vehicles in the Hunt Armory in the Shadyside neighborhood of Pittsburgh, to a commissioned poetic work by Pittsburgh composer Nancy Galbraith entitled “Smoke and Steel” that celebrates the industry that defined Pittsburgh and which was performed at the historic Carrie Furnace site in Braddock, PA.
Each fiscal year, BCP offers a Season of three choral productions linked by a theme that often addresses racial, social, and cultural issues. The Season includes a summer educational program (Summer Sing) which enables anyone interested in choral singing to practice and perform a selection of choral pieces, along with other singers of various ages and skill levels.
BCP is guided by a Board of Directors (10 to 16 members), advised by the Choir members’ Operations Committee, managed by a professional Executive Director, and supported by multiple committees (e.g., Governance, Finance, Development).
