Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre/Notes in Motion

Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre is a non-profit company that creates professional performances and presents arts-in-education programs through our dance education program Notes in Motion. Founded in 2000, we present dynamic original works, festival engagements, site-specific, and community programs that engage audiences from start to finish and beckon a response of thought, feeling, and soul. We include audiences in the creative process by offering open rehearsals, informal performances of developing work, and access to videos, photos, and interactive tools on our website. Our 20th Anniversary Season was presented by the CUNY Dance Initiative at Baruch Performing Arts Center. Selwyn has recently taught Master Choreography Classes at New Women New York and Temple University. We have presented productions at venues including Baruch Performing Arts Center, New York Live Arts, Mark Morris Dance Center, Tribeca Performing Arts Center, The Kumble Theater, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Danspace Project, The Ailey Citigroup Theater, John Jay College, and Dance New Amsterdam. Our dance education program, Notes in Motion, has reached over 95 schools and 87,000 students in NYC. As a vendor of the NYC Department of Education, all our programs reflect the Department of Education’s Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts. We offer custom-tailored residency and after-school programs for Pre K - 12th grades that teach ballet, modern, jazz, hip hop, African, tap, yoga, Latin, and more. Programs are united by our pedagogical approach, The Movement Exchange Method, which combines technique/skills-based instruction with creative exploration, student-devised choreography, and improvisation. We create long-lasting arts partnerships with schools that allow students to build on skills from year to year while inspiring the greater school community with the beauty, magic, and vitality of dance. Our 35 Teaching Artists work collaboratively with classroom teachers at every stage: planning, implementation, performance sharing, assessment, to evaluation. We also bring Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre performances, workshops, and community events to our schools throughout NYC.
