Care-Based Safety’s mission is to work toward designing and resourcing a non-police response program that will grow life-affirming and care-based safety options and opportunities for all community members in Washtenaw County. Care-Based Safety is a community-based, non-emergent crisis and quality of life intervention, addressing the significant portion of calls for service that involve checking on the welfare of individuals, families, and neighbors. These calls may include folks who are, or are perceived to be, experiencing mental health crises, substance abuse disorders, unsheltered circumstances, seniors, and other potential circumstances raising community concern. The goal of CBS is to de-escalate, connect, aid, and support (through referrals, peer support, and warm handoffs) whenever possible thereby providing an alternative response model.
