Kupanda promotes inclusion, independence, personal leadership, and strong community by providing culturally appropriate services to African refugee youth and their families. Founded over seven years ago by Congolese refugees Joseph Ekyoci and Jafferi Kyanza and local attorney Craig Nicholas, Kupanda began as a grassroots initiative at the City Heights Public Library, focusing on enhancing English language skills for youth with parents facing language barriers.
Recognizing the challenges of resettlement and the barriers refugee youth encounter, Kupanda aimed to create a safe and supportive environment to combat high dropout rates and low career prospects.
What started as a small reading group has grown into a biweekly after-school tutoring program at the Colina Park Recreation Center, primarily serving Congolese and Burundian youth and reaching over 100 children. Kupanda is dedicated to providing mentorship, support, and opportunities for academic and social growth while fostering parent involvement in their children's education.
