Exciting things have been happening in a charter school in East New York. For the past six years, Imagine Me Leadership Charter School has been getting black males to not only close the achievement gap but erase the notion that underachieving is an expectation for anyone that looks like them. We have successfully reversed the achievement gap in Math and ELA. Since 2013, our boys have grown from a proficiency rate of 19.1% in Math and 6.5% in ELA to a stellar 72.3% and 73.3% in each subject, respectively. In Math, that is a total growth of 53.2% and a percent change of 279%. In ELA, that is a total growth of 66.8% and a total percent change of 1028%. This is all in addition to the 100% passing rate of our fourth graders on the New York State Science Test for the last two years. Imagine Me’s performance and growth has also outpaced the state, city and our district. Not only do we have a higher percentage of proficient students than the average for New York State, New York City and Community School District 19 in both ELA and Math. Our growth in Math and ELA is greater than their combined growth in Math and ELA. The great news doesn’t stop there. We also have more proficient students in ELA than any other charter school in District 19 when comparing elementary school grades and only second to one in Mathematics. When compared to all male charter schools in New York City, Imagine Me is second to none in both ELA and Math.
