New Women New Yorkers (NWNY) empowers immigrant women through workforce development and educational programs, providing a safe and inclusive space to build community and share stories.
Role and Responsibilities
As a Board Director, your primary responsibilities include:
Oversight & Governance:
- Participate actively in Board meetings and NWNY’s major events, including the year-end event.
- Engage with NWNY programs by observing at least two annually to gain insights into operations and impact.
- Oversee financial governance by approving the annual budget and compensation arrangements.
- Enhance Board effectiveness by aiding in the recruitment of new Board Directors.
- Guide the strategic direction and policy development in alignment with NWNY’s mission, and periodically evaluate organizational performance and outcomes.
Fundraising:
- Collaborate actively in fundraising efforts to support NWNY’s mission and goals.
- Network and build relationships with foundations, corporations, and individual donors to expand funding opportunities.
Community Support and Outreach:
- Serve as a passionate ambassador for NWNY, promoting its vision and goals.
- Build and strengthen relationships with community leaders, organizations, and other key stakeholders to enhance NWNY’s reach and impact.
Give-or-Get Policy
Each Board Director pledges to annually contribute or fundraise a minimum of $1,000, with a $250 commitment upon starting the role.
Term and Time Commitment
- Two-year term, eligible for re-appointment.
- Bi-monthly plenary Board meetings with two-week advance notice.
- Attendance at NWNY’s year-end event and minimum two program observations annually.
- Average commitment: 8 hours/month.
Desired Skills and Experience
- A minimum of 5 years of professional experience, with a preference for candidates who have a background in the nonprofit sector or in fields related to NWNY’s mission and objectives.
- Proven diplomatic skills, with a strong ability to cultivate relationships and build consensus among diverse individuals and groups.
- Experience in fundraising activities, whether in a formal or informal capacity. This includes skills in donation solicitation and an understanding of event planning and execution. We value diverse experiences in fundraising, recognizing that effective strategies can come from various professional and personal backgrounds.
- A commitment to dedicating the necessary time and effort to fulfill the responsibilities of a Board Director effectively.
- High standards of integrity and a deep passion for making a meaningful difference in the lives of NWNY’s beneficiaries.
- Additional desirable skills include strategic planning, financial acumen, and experience in community outreach and engagement.
