Descrição

San Geronimo Hatchery Cleanup

San Geronimo Creek is a tributary of Lagunitas Creek, one of the southernmost strongholds for endangered Coho Salmon, threatened Steelhead Trout and Chinook Salmon and provides essential habitat for these salmonids. On the bank of San Geronimo Creek, adjacent to the Marin Water San Geronimo Water Treatment Plant, exists an old coho hatchery site. The hatchery was in operation from the early 1980s to the 1990s, and it allowed the incubation and hatching of coho eggs in the San Geronimo Valley. The hatchery has not been used since 1993.

The goal of this restoration event is to safely break down and remove all structures and pipes from the site for recycling and disposal. This cleanup project will contribute to continued restoration efforts in San Geronimo Creek and the Lagunitas Creek Watershed, with the aim of maintaining and creating habitat for salmonids of all life stages.

This event is suitable for ages 14 and up. Participants should be comfortable working with shovels and crowbars and walking on uneven surfaces. Heavy rains or winds will postpone the event. Tools, gloves and snacks will be provided.

The Watershed Stewards Program (WSP) is dedicated to improving watershed health by actively engaging in restoration science, civic service, and community education while empowering the next generation of environmental stewards.
