Volunteer ESL Teacher

Garces Foundation is looking for dedicated and innovative adult English as a Second Language (ESL) volunteer teachers and classroom teaching assistants for this spring from April 8 - June 23, 2024. We offer in-person classes in South Philadelphia, 100% online classes, and hybrid classes (one day in-person and one day online). Our program runs on quarterly sessions and we enroll more than 100 learners a session. We offer four levels of English classes: beginning, high beginning, low intermediate, and intermediate. Most, but not all learners, are native Spanish speakers, and the large majority currently work in the restaurant and/or construction industries.

In addition to ESL classes, we also offer learners the option to enroll in additional workshops with topics ranging from restaurant professional development, digital literacy, financial literacy, health topics, nutrition, and citizenship.

Basic Info / Requirements:

• 10 week teaching commitment (April 8 - June 23, 2024).
• Must attend 1 pre-session training (Wednesday, April 3, 7:00pm) at BOK in South Philadelphia
• Approximately 2-3 hours as week (1-2 classes a week for 90 min/class)
• We offer classes that meet both in the morning and in the evening during the week.
• Curriculum is provided.
• Spanish language skills are NOT required but can be useful

Basic Qualifications:

• bachelor's degree (or currently working on one)
• advanced English language proficiency
• strong interpersonal communication skills
• an interest in serving the Latino immigrant community of Philadelphia

Preferred Qualifications:

• BS or MS in education (or closely related field)
• TESOL, TEFL, or ESL certification OR experience teaching another language
• experience using Zoom and Google Applications (Meet, Classroom, Drive, Docs, Sheets, etc.)
• experience learning a second or foreign language and cultural understanding of the Latino community at large

Bonus Qualifications:

• Spanish language skills
• work experience in restaurant industry
• work experience in construction industry
