STEM Canada is a registered not-for-profit global program that specializes in an advanced, bar-none STEM-based educational curriculum that emphasizes the interconnected subject areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The STEM program is open to all students from preschool to high school with the mission to deliver top-notch STEM literacy and application, designed to teach students in the STEM fields, yielding globally competitive results.


*Please note, that you must be available for the next 3 months if you commit to a position listed above. All volunteers on board for this project must be available to attend weekly team meetings on any ONE of the following days:

- Thursday evenings 8 pm Eastern - 40 - 60 minutes, OR

- Sunday evenings 8 pm Eastern - 40 - 60 minutes, OR

- Wednesday afternoon 12 pm Eastern - 40 - 60 minutes

 Job Description:

As the Volunteer Policy and Legalities Manager, you will play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with relevant policies, regulations, and legal requirements across STEM Canada's programs and operations. You will oversee the development, implementation, and enforcement of policies and procedures to protect the organization's interests and promote ethical conduct and accountability.


Key Responsibilities:

·       Policy Development: Lead the development, review, and updating of organizational policies and procedures to ensure alignment with legal requirements, industry standards, and best practices.

·       Compliance Monitoring: Monitor compliance with internal policies, regulatory requirements, and contractual obligations, conducting audits and assessments to identify areas of non-compliance and recommend corrective actions.

·       Risk Management: Identify potential legal and regulatory risks and liabilities associated with STEM Canada's activities and operations and develop strategies to mitigate risks and protect organizational interests.

·       Contract Management: Review and negotiate contracts, agreements, and legal documents, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and compliance with legal and contractual requirements.

·       Legal Research: Conduct legal research and analysis on relevant laws, regulations, and precedents affecting STEM education, providing guidance and recommendations to organizational leadership and staff.

·       Ethics and Integrity: Promote a culture of ethical conduct, integrity, and accountability within the organization, providing guidance and training to staff and volunteers on ethical standards and professional conduct.

·       Incident Response: Coordinate and oversee the response to legal and compliance incidents, including investigations, reporting, and resolution of issues under applicable laws and regulations.

·       Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with internal stakeholders, external legal counsel, regulatory agencies, and other partners to address legal and regulatory issues and ensure alignment with organizational goals and objectives.

·       Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of legal and compliance activities, prepare reports and documentation as required, and provide regular updates to senior management and the board of directors on legal and regulatory matters.


Requirements:

·       Bachelor's degree in law, legal studies, or a related field is required; Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent degree is mandatory.

·       Previous experience of 1 year in policy development, compliance management, or legal affairs is mandatory (preferably in the non-profit or education sector).

·       Strong understanding of relevant laws, regulations, and legal principles related to non-profit organizations, education, and youth programs.

·       Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex legal documents, analyze legal issues, and develop practical solutions.

·       Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex legal concepts and requirements to non-legal stakeholders.

·       Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in reviewing legal documents, drafting policies, and conducting legal research.

·       Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders, including legal counsel, senior management, and program staff.

·       Commitment to upholding ethical standards, integrity, and professionalism in all aspects of work and decision-making.

·       Flexibility and adaptability to changing legal and regulatory environments, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

We are thrilled to announce the launch of our biggest and most important STEM Innovation Summer Program to date, running across 4 provinces!

We need eager volunteers to help us plan, and execute this program. Whether you are a new volunteer or a past volunteer, we are reaching out to you to see if you have any time to lend. We need your help!

The volunteer requirement for this program is a commitment of at least 2-4 hours per week beginning from April 2 - 15 and will last until June 30, 2024. We have a lot of exciting opportunities including team leadership, management, supervisory, and VP positions available for this project.
