    Descrição

Virtual Art Instructor - Lead Weekly Creative Sessions for Homebound Brooklyn Seniors

    Who We Are

For five years, we've connected homebound Brooklyn seniors through weekly Zoom conversation and activity groups. We serve approximately 40 participants—primarily Black women ages 65-90, many living in public housing—who depend on our program for social connection and meaningful engagement. For many, our groups are their primary opportunity for creative expression and community interaction.

    The Role

We're seeking a creative, patient volunteer to lead a weekly art-making group for seniors via Zoom audio. You'll guide participants through accessible art projects in painting, drawing, needlework, collage, or other media that can be done at home. Groups are kept small—no more than 8 participants—to enhance the group experience and allow for meaningful interaction. This is your chance to share your passion for art while combating isolation and bringing joy to people who have limited opportunities for creative engagement.

What You'll Do (1.5-2 hours per week)

    • Lead one weekly art session (50-60 minutes) at a consistent day/time
    • Design and teach accessible projects suitable for varying skill levels and physical abilities
    • Provide clear, detailed verbal instructions since participants join audio-only via phone
    • Encourage creativity, experimentation, and group sharing
    • Create a welcoming, supportive environment where everyone feels comfortable participating
    • Spend 30-60 minutes weekly planning the session

We're Looking For Someone Who Has

    Required:

    • Experience and skill in painting, drawing, needlework, collage, or other accessible art forms
    • Ability to give clear verbal instructions without relying on visual demonstrations
    • Patience and enthusiasm when working with older adults of varying abilities
    • Comfortable using basic Zoom functions (we provide tech support)
    • Reliable internet connection
    • 8-week minimum commitment to build relationships with participants

    Helpful But Not Required:

    • Teaching or art instruction experience
    • Background working with seniors or therapeutic art
    • Knowledge of adaptive art techniques for people with limited mobility or vision
    • Cultural awareness and sensitivity to the experiences of Black women seniors
    • Understanding of challenges faced by residents of public housing

    What Makes This Unique

Since participants join via phone audio only, you'll need to describe techniques, colors, and processes verbally rather than demonstrating visually. This creative constraint makes the teaching both challenging and rewarding. You'll develop skills in verbal communication while helping people create art who might otherwise have no access to creative activities.

    Time Commitment & Format

    • One 50-60 minute session per week at a consistent scheduled time
    • 30-60 minutes prep time
    • Fully remote - lead from your own art space
    • We provide basic art supplies to participants

    Why This Matters

For homebound Black women seniors, many living in public housing, creating art provides cognitive stimulation, emotional expression, and a sense of accomplishment. Your weekly sessions give participants something to look forward to, a reason to gather supplies and prepare their space, and the joy of creating something beautiful. Many participants display their artwork proudly and share it with family members—your teaching creates ripples of connection far beyond the Zoom call. You'll be serving a community that has historically had limited access to arts programming.

    What We Provide

    • Training on our program format and participant needs
    • Technical support (separate tech person handles Zoom)
    • Flexibility to design curriculum around your expertise
    • Connection to appreciative participants who value your guidance
    • Ongoing support from our program coordinator

    Location: Remote/Virtual (serving Brooklyn seniors) | Time: 1.5-2 hours/week | Duration: 8-week minimum

To Apply: Send us a brief message about your art background, teaching experience (if any), and which art forms you'd be most excited to teach. Include your availability and any questions.

Use your artistic gifts to brighten the lives of isolated seniors.
