Nutrition Program at Mystic Valley Elder Services
The Nutrition Program addresses multiple issues faced by older adults, including poor nutrition, food insecurity, chronic disease, and social isolation. The Nutrition Program provides nutritionally balanced meals, screening, education, and counseling to help older adults maintain a healthy nutritional status.
Nutrition Program Volunteer Opportunities:
Meal Site Assistant
The Meal Site Assistant works as part of a team to serve lunches to seniors at congregate dining sites (aka meal sites). Duties include checking in guests, setting tables, delivering
meals and beverages to tables, chatting with guests, and cleaning up.
Time commitment: minimum of 1 day per week (approximately 2-3 hours per day)
Bread of Life Food Delivery Assistant
Mystic Valley Elder Services has partnered with Bread of Life to deliver nutritious meals to senior housing sites in Malden and Melrose. We need volunteer Food Delivery Assistants to help unload food/meals from delivery trucks when they arrive onsite and deliver them to residents in their buildings.
Time commitment: minimum of 1 shift per month (approximately 1-3 hours per shift)
Specific days and times may vary depending on the site.
Ensure Deliverer
Homebound seniors often require additional nutritional supplementation to
maintain their health and well-being. That is why we need volunteer Ensure Deliverers to help with the occasional delivery of Ensure nutrition shakes to seniors in our service area.
Time commitment: 1-3 days per month for approximately 2-3 hours per day (between the hours of 9 AM and 12 PM)
On call for driving needs (volunteers may accept available shifts if desired)
Mystic Tea Assistant
Mystic Tea is a special monthly event that provides a safe and welcoming place for the LGBTQ
members of our senior community to build peer support and share with each
other. The participants may enjoy the meal served, but it is the company that
keeps folks coming back, month after month and year after year. The “tea”
includes coffee, tea, and a hearty meal, but more importantly, good company and
conversation.
Time commitment: Mystic Tea is held on the third Tuesday of the month from 4-6 PM
at Mystic Valley Elder Services in Malden. Mystic Tea Assistants are needed to help set up for the event, serve food and beverages, and clean up after the event.
