Have you ever wanted to change someone’s life? By giving the gift of reading to another, now you can!
Interested tutors must be at least 18 years old and should complete the following form on our website: https://www.dyslexiatutoringprogram.org/tutors/prospective-tutors/. Once we receive your form, we will contact you with an application. In addition, tutors must agree to a background check and should be available for an in-person or virtual interview. After electronically submitting the form, please email our Outreach Coordinator, Will Guy, at wguy@dyslexiatutoringprogram.org, to note your interest.
Following the interview process, tutors should join us for one of our next volunteer tutor training courses. The first course will run for 8 weeks and will begin Wednesday, June 19th, from 4-8PM. All classes to follow will meet once weekly on Wednesdays from 4-8PM. The last class will meet on Wednesday, August 18th, 2024. The second class will meet daily for one week from 9AM-3:30PM , and there will be a 30-minute break each day for lunch. Both classes will be held at the Dyslexia Tutoring Program, located at 711 West 40th Street, Suite 310, Baltimore, MD 21211.
During the course, tutors will learn the strategies necessary to teach reading, writing, and spelling to our students. We offer this 30-hour, Level 1 Orton-Gillingham course for free to volunteers who commit to tutoring a student(s) for a total of 60 hours, or at least one hour per week.
After completing the course, tutors will be paired with a student. Tutors and students are encouraged to meet in one of our three fully stocked tutoring rooms at The Rotunda, or in any convenient public setting, such as a library, community center, or school. Tutors are never permitted to hold tutoring sessions at a student’s private home.
Think about where you might be without the ability to read. This is an incredible opportunity to truly change someone’s life.
