    Descrição

This intern will work closely with the Cultural Preservation and Interpretation Departments to develop and process The West End Museum’s (WEM) digital archives to make them more accessible to the public. This project based internship will focus on creating and refining metadata from material in the Museum’s digital archive as part of our mission to preserve the cultural artifacts of the West End community and educate the public about the impacts of urban renewal.

The first project will be to adapt our article backlog into posts on the When and Where in Boston database. These posts will identify significant events, individuals, or locations in the West End of Boston. Minimal research will be necessary to fact check the source articles.

The second project will be to create metadata for digital files of the West End Video Newsletter stored in the WEM digital archive and posted on YouTube. This will include identifying individuals and writing brief descriptions of the contents of each episode.

The third project’s goal is to develop a searchable database of West End businesses on the eve of urban renewal. This will include finding and analyzing photographs, business records, maps, and oral histories that mention these businesses.

Additionally opportunities, if desired, could include: being trained and serving as a docent in the WEM galleries; writing short historical articles for the website; assisting with educational activities at events; or becoming a presenter at our When and Where in Your Neighborhood event series.

This internship can be conducted in person, remotely, or hybrid, although we encourage a few visits to the museum. Hours and length of the internship can be flexible, but WEM would like to be able to complete the projects by the 2026-2027 school year.

There is no funding available for this position, but we recognize the importance of lowering barriers to museum careers. We thus encourage applicants to seek out grants or stipends from schools, foundations, or other organizations that would support them during their internship.

→ We will review your materials and contact you for a phone interview. This call is to get to know you, discuss the next steps, and expectations, and note your availability. After a decision has been made by our staff you will be notified via email.

Note: Internships are volunteer based, unpaid, and will be recognized in line with the University requirements for the benefit of the student.

This position will require a minimum commitment of approximately 6-12 hours per week.

    Expectations:

Passion for History: A genuine interest in history, urban planning, and culture are essential for this role.

Research Skills: Strong research skills, including the ability to navigate archival materials, access online databases, and critically analyze historical sources.

Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in recording and documenting research findings.

Communication: Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to collaborate with team members and share findings.

Flexibility and Reliability: Willingness to adapt, work independently or as part of a team, and contribute to various museum projects as needed. Dependable and punctual attendance for scheduled volunteer shifts and a commitment to fulfilling assigned responsibilities.
