About us

For 121 years, the YWCA of Richmond has been a leading force in securing an environment of change and empowerment for women and their families. Originally founded to house women coming to the city seeking factory work, the YWCA continues its mission of caring for those most in need and providing equal opportunities for women, children and families of all ages, races, and income levels.

Over the years, the YWCA has modified its programs to support the emerging needs of the community, however; it has never strayed from its mission. In addition to providing accredited early childhood education programming, the YWCA remains committed to ensuring that victims of domestic and sexual violence experience rescue, recovery, and life-rebuilding programs that foster emotional, social, and economic stability.

Early Childhood Development:
The YWCA Child Development Center's purpose is to provide an environment that encourages social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth and development of the child as a whole. In keeping with the YWCA's mission, the Child Development Center provides services to families from a diverse population. Our philosophy is that childhood should be a time of fun, warmth, security, exploration and discovery. The staff nurtures and encourages the creativity and curiosity of the children in our care, providing an atmosphere where each child can experience success at his/her own level.

The YWCA has long been a source of quality preschool education. We are one of a handful of nonprofit centers certified by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). We offer full-day, year-round preschool programming. Our children are provided with educational activities, field trips, and nutritious meals from 7:00 AM until 6:00 PM. The YWCA Child Development Center seeks to address the unique needs of low-income and homeless families with children.

Domestic and Sexual Violence:
The YWCA of Richmond understands the complexity of domestic violence and uses its Sexual and Domestic Violence Programs to reach out and provide crucial services to those in need. Our primary services are crisis intervention, education, advocacy, case management, safety planning, and counseling. These services are offered to every client--both in our residential (safe house) and community programs. The YWCA of Richmond provides free comprehensive domestic violence services to survivors. We operate two confidentially-located emergency shelters in the Richmond area that women and their children can access at any time. We operate a 24-hour hotline that provides crisis intervention, information and referral services.
