About us

Founded by cellist Yo-Yo Ma in 1998, the Silk Road Project is recognized worldwide as an innovative cultural entrepreneur connecting the world's neighborhoods by bringing together artists and audiences around the globe. Under the artistic direction of Mr. Ma and the leadership of CEO and Executive Director Laura Freid, the Silk Road Project has been praised for its groundbreaking public and private cultural partnerships, catalytic educational initiatives, and innovative musical exploration.

Central to the mission of the Project is the Silk Road Ensemble, a collective of virtuoso artists and musicians from 17 countries, many of whom are leading exponents of great world music traditions. The Ensemble has performed in 23 countries in locations ranging from concert halls to stadiums to museum galleries. They have recorded four albums on Sony Classical and a fifth on Harmonia Mundi.

Education and community outreach are major features of the Silk Road Project's worldwide travel. The Project's current educational initiative is Silk Road Connect, an innovative, cross-disciplinary engagement program designed to spark a passion for learning and establish 6th grade as a platform for lifelong success.

The Silk Road Project is an independent 501(c)(3) organization currently in residence at Harvard University.
