About us

L'Arche Harbor House is a community of family-like homes where people with and without intellectual disabilities share their lives together and give witness to the reality that persons with disabilities possess inherent qualities of welcome, wonderment, spirituality, and friendship. We are located in Jacksonville, Florida, where we have five homes, a day program (Rainbow arts & crafts workshop) and a community center, where we host events for the extended community.

We invite community members to share their lives in communities of faith and friendship. Community members are transformed through relationships of mutuality, respect, and companionship as we live, work, pray, and play together.

L'Arche Harbor House is part of the International Federation of L'Arche communities, consisting of more than 5,000 members in 34 different countries. L'Arche was founded by Jean Vanier and made known to many by the writings of Henri J.M. Nouwen.

Our community identifies as having an ecumenical spirituality, with strong roots in the Catholic tradition. We seek to live the Beatitudes in our daily lives through relationships of mutuality and by placing the weakest in our community (the core members who have intellectual and physical disabilities) at the center. Our assistants (staff and volunteers) come from diverse backgrounds, but all have one thing in common: the desire to share daily life with the core members.
