The mission of New Haven Farms is to promote health and community development through urban agriculture. Our Fresh Produce Prescription Program utilizes regular exposure to – and participation in – urban agriculture, cooking classes, and nutrition education to enhance the health and food security of our members.
Medical providers from community clinic Fair Haven Community Health Center refer patients who have at least two diabetes risk factors and an income within 200 percent of the 2010 U.S. poverty line to our program. We cultivate seven urban sites where patients attend weekly cooking demonstrations, nutrition classes, and farming sessions. They also take home a box of nutrient-dense fresh vegetables harvested that week.
New Haven Farms is a community response to the intersecting crises of diabetes, obesity, environmental degradation, and poverty.
New Haven Farms is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization.
