About the DPN
The DPN is a coordinated network of experts who have come together to support organizations and individuals that come under threat while working to protect and strengthen American democracy. The DPN connects eligible applicants with no-cost crisis-response and resilience-building assistance— including physical security, cybersecurity, crisis communications, and legal assistance.
Position Overview
This position will oversee operations, risk, compliance, and financial administration for the Democracy Protection Network (DPN).
This is a remote role. The position will report to the DPN Director or Deputy Director.
Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Operational Oversight - 30%
- Ensure operational excellence as we grow from a startup to an established organization.
- Build systems and processes that support sustainable growth.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives aligned with organizational strategy in partnership with the DPN leadership team.
- Oversee implementation of data security and data management processes.
Financial Management and Oversight - 30%
- Maintain a schedule of DPN operational milestones, including grant reporting, insurance renewals, government reporting timelines, regulatory compliance, tax filings, and annual audits.
- Create and maintain a purchase order/encumbrance system to ensure fidelity and accuracy of contract provisions to vendor invoices.
- Support the preparation of annual budgets and update ongoing budget projections to accurately track anticipated expenditures against budget.
- Prepare quarterly, annual, and interim financial statements.
- Prepare grant reports to funders.
Compliance and Risk Management - 30%
- Provide leadership and comprehensive oversight in developing and implementing compliance and risk mitigation practices for the DPN as well as network members serving beneficiaries.
- Oversee the development of, and adherence to, network-specific personnel policies, including onboarding and offboarding.
- Implement best practices for vetting new vendors, liaising with existing vendors, and executing vendor contracts and renewals.
Administration - 10%
- Tend to internal administrative items (e.g., emails, timekeeping, expenses, HR).
- Participate in internal activities (e.g., team meetings, peer learning communities, culture building activities, and regular check-ins with supervisor(s)).
- Engage in individual and team-wide professional development/learning opportunities.
- Supervise staff.
What You’ll Need
- 5+ years operational leadership experience- Operations Director, or similar role.
- Skill in developing and maintaining policies that ensure legal and ethical compliance.
- Expertise in budgeting, financial reporting, and grant management.
- Some familiarity with cybersecurity best practices preferred.
- Adaptability and facility with long-term planning and goal-setting.
- Ability to adapt and implement processes for continuous improvement.
- Experience and ability to manage a team around complex and shifting operations dynamics, while simultaneously seeing the big-picture and engaging in detailed operational questions.
- Excellent self-management, including the ability to pivot or adapt in response to urgent needs while not neglecting self-care.
- Familiarity with the landscape of pro-democracy organizations and leaders.
- Comfort working alongside people with whom you may have deep disagreements; ability to be transparent about your own beliefs without being restricted by them; and willingness to invest in building bridges and finding common ground.
- The ability to engage in moderate travel (up to 20%) for field-related gatherings and team retreats.
