As of 2023, RefugePoint has directly helped more than 140,000 refugees relocate to safety, supported more than 4,300 refugees in Nairobi to achieve self-reliance by establishing small businesses, and assisted partner organizations to reach more than 250,000 refugees globally. Our work spans 356 locations in 63 countries worldwide.

    JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Senior Accountant is an integral figure in our finance department and will contribute to upholding the financial accuracy and health of our organization. This position reports to the Associate Director of Finance and works closely with the Staff Accountant, Chief Financial Officer, and various Programs and Development staff. Specific responsibilities include:

    Lead the meticulous execution and management of the general accounting functions.

    • Ensure the integrity of the accounting general ledgers and systems, and compliance with appropriate GAAP and FASB standards and regulatory requirements.
    • Perform month-end, quarter-end and year-end closing procedures to finalize financial statements.
    • Reconcile balance sheet accounts to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
    • Perform online bank reconciliations.
    • Support the annual audit and Form 990 filing process by providing information as requested.
    • Create financial forecasts to help guide organizational planning and budgeting
    • Cross-train on a variety of tasks (AP, AR, etc) to support accounting colleagues.
    • Serve as accounting lead for payroll preparation and review functions, in close collaboration with the HR team.
    • Become proficient in RefugePoint’s expense reporting platform and cross train with Finance and Operations colleagues to conduct review of employee expense reports
    • Serve as a helpful resource for all departments and improve financial literacy within the organization.
    • Operate with an eye towards improvement and effectiveness, including staying updated with changes in accounting regulations and implementing necessary adjustments.

    Oversee and manage grant accounting from initial receipt to final reporting.

    • Track, analyze and ensure proper revenue recognition for grants received by the organization.
    • Ensure proper allocation and reporting of grant funds in accordance with grant agreements.
    • Work closely with the financial team to ensure completion and accuracy of all grant and contract accounting
    • Prepare financial reports for grantors, including government agencies, detailing how the funds were utilized and ensuring compliance with grant requirements.
    • Participate in quarterly and annual UNHCR project audits, including the collection of supporting documents.
    • Prepare internal reports for management, operations, and development teams as needed.
    • Assist in reconciling budget to actual expense activity for all grants and contracts, including preparing financial reports and invoices for all grants to ensure timely and accurate billings submission to government funders.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

    • At least 7 years of experience in similar roles at a nonprofit organization, with demonstrated knowledge of GAAP, FASB, and grant accounting and reporting. Experience with government grant accounting is a plus.
    • An undergraduate degree in Accounting, Business, Administration, or a similar field is required. A CPA is preferred.
    • Demonstrated experience leading monthly, quarterly, and annual closing.
    • Advanced knowledge of commonly used accounting and reporting software such as QuickBooks Online, Sage, or equivalent software, as well as commonly used office programs such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Google Sheets, Google Docs, Adobe Acrobat.
    • Impeccable attention to detail and pride in producing meticulous and error-free work product.
    • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work under deadlines.
    • Strong analytical skills, ability to find and solve complex accounting problems,
    • Integrity and discretion in dealing with financial information.
    • Ability to communicate and collaborate in a multicultural work environment
    • A track record of building and deepening contributions over multiple years within organizations.
