    Director of Marketing & Sales

    About the Opportunity

TOC Arts Partners (formerly Tom O’Connor Consulting Group) is a national consultancy partnering with arts and cultural institutions and leaders to align strategy, structure, and leadership toward a thriving cultural sector. Visit www.tocartspartners.com for more about the firm, values, and services.

We seek a mission-aligned Director of Marketing and Sales to shape how TOC Arts Partners shows up in the market, equip our team to represent the firm with clarity and confidence, and strengthen our presence among arts and culture leaders and institutions. This is a half-time, senior-level role for someone who thrives in a relationship-driven professional services environment and understands that in our world, reputation and thought leadership are the engine of growth.

The Director of Marketing and Sales is central to how TOC Arts Partners communicates its value and builds its pipeline. This role will set and drive marketing strategy, guide our external-facing voice and channels, develop and refine our sales materials and messaging, lead our approach to conferences and events, and equip the full team to represent the firm effectively. Note that while sales enablement and support is a function of this role, it is not expected to be a traditional sales role.

You will direct and coordinate staff and external vendors and will be a trusted strategic partner to the CEO and a visible steward of the firm’s brand. This role requires strong judgment and an ability to advocate for your perspective, comfort working across a small and nimble team, and genuine familiarity with and investment in the arts and culture sector.

    About TOC Arts Partners

TOC Arts Partners, LLC was founded in 2015 (originally as Tom O’Connor Consulting Group), and is a national consultancy for arts and cultural institutions and leaders, offering two integrated services: organizational strategy and executive search, each guided by a seasoned team of arts professionals. Our clients represent a full range of artistic genres, budget categories, business models, geographies, and cultural contexts. What unifies them is that they are all mission-driven organizations building community through arts and culture. We share their passion.

As for our team, we are a boutique firm made up of high-performing, passionate, collaborative, diverse, and kind individuals, and seek someone who identifies with these attributes and brings new ideas and perspectives. Our company is distributed and largely remote/work-from-home (our CEO and EA keep a midtown Manhattan office), and prioritizes frequent virtual collaboration when possible for cohesion, shared learning, and camaraderie. We gather in-person as a full team annually. Importantly, we work very hard and care deeply about what we do, but whether considering potential clients or potential team members, we prioritize generosity, kindness, and shared success – we love ambition and results, but not when coupled with ruthless individualism, and we mean that.

    Key Responsibilities

    Brand Marketing and Content Strategy

    • Own the firm’s marketing strategy, setting priorities and ensuring consistency across all channels and touchpoints.
    • Develop and refine messaging frameworks that serve our fieldwide audience of arts workers and job seekers, while also speaking clearly to our two primary audiences of potential clients: arts and culture CEOs and board members.
    • Guide content strategy, determining what we publish, where, and why, and oversee its execution by staff and external partners.
    • Serve as strategic lead for the firm’s digital presence, including website and social channels, directing staff and vendors rather than executing directly.
    • Monitor marketing analytics and translate findings into clear recommendations for the CEO and leadership team.

    Sales Support and Team Enablement

    • Partner with the CEO to strengthen the firm’s approach to sales, including how we position our services, structure our proposals, and follow through with prospects.
    • Develop and maintain materials that equip the full team to represent TOC Arts Partners with confidence: talking points, capability statements, service overviews, and related collateral.
    • Serve as a knowledgeable first point of contact for inbound inquiries, providing initial information and routing conversations to the appropriate leadership team member. Note that as a people-first professional services firm deeply embedded in our field, and with the nature of our services, our leadership team is heavily involved in sales conversations.

    Conferences and Events

    • Own conference and events strategy: which gatherings we prioritize, what presence makes sense, and how we align our participation with business development and field engagement goals.
    • Work with the CEO and leadership to determine how we activate at key conferences, whether by hosting events, engaging attendees individually, or other approaches.
    • Coordinate with internal staff on logistics and materials, ensuring conference presence is strategically coherent and well-executed.

    Team Coordination and Vendor Management

    • Provide strategic direction to staff members who support marketing functions, including social content, website maintenance, and project coordination.
    • Manage relationships with external designers and other marketing vendors, ensuring output reflects the firm’s brand and priorities.
    • Build systems and rhythms that make our marketing function more effective and sustainable over time.

    Qualifications & Skills

    Required:

    • Kindness, generosity, and a collaborative spirit.
    • At least 7–8 years of marketing experience, with meaningful time in a senior or strategic capacity.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, an eye for quality content, and the ability to develop and refine messaging for specific and nuanced audience segments.
    • Demonstrated experience in or knowledge of B2B professional services marketing, with an understanding of long sales cycles, relationship-driven business development, and multi-stakeholder decision-making.
    • Ability to direct staff and vendors clearly without micromanaging, and to maintain quality standards without being the primary executor.
    • Genuine familiarity with or affinity for the arts and culture sector so you can speak credibly to its leaders.
    • Comfort working in a small, entrepreneurial environment where strategic leadership and day-to-day execution often live in different hands.
    • Analytical mindset able to interpret marketing data and translate it into clear strategic direction.

    Preferred:

    • Experience in consulting, executive search, or other professional services firms.
    • Existing relationships or fluency within the arts and culture sector, performing arts, museums, or related fields.
    • Experience developing thought leadership content strategies.
    • Familiarity with CRM platforms (we use HubSpot) and standard marketing analytics tools.
