    Descrição

    Executive Director

    Heurich House Museum

The Heurich House Museum is dedicated to exploring American civic identity through the lens of German immigrant Christian Heurich and his successful DC brewery, while creating programming that offers an equitable path to success for modern local craftspeople. Located in Washington, DC’s Dupont Circle neighborhood, the Museum operates from a four-story, 13,000-square foot historic home built between 1892 and 1894 and long recognized as one of the city’s most cherished architectural treasures.

Today, the Heurich House Museum serves as a vibrant historic site, an incubator for small-scale manufacturers, and a welcoming public gathering place. With an annual budget of approximately $1M, a team of six full-time and 20 part-time staff, and a Board of Trustees composed of civic, cultural, and business leaders, the Museum reaches thousands of visitors each year through tours, public programs, its Urban Manufacturing Incubator, and a seasonal biergarten. Building on more than a decade of growth and innovation, the next Executive Director will shape the Museum’s next chapter—expanding programs, strengthening earned and contributed revenue, advancing preservation priorities guided by a Conservation Management Plan, and deepening partnerships across DC’s cultural, civic, and small business ecosystems.

Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director will lead a dedicated team spanning public programming, interpretation, preservation, incubator services, and biergarten operations. This leader will be an entrepreneurial, community-minded connector with the vision and skills to steward the Museum’s mission, people, and resources.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Collaborate with the Board, staff, and community to define and advance a bold, people-centered vision for the Museum’s future.
    • Lead short- and long-term planning that integrates creativity, financial stewardship, and entrepreneurial thinking.
    • Strengthen the Museum’s role as a welcoming hub for neighbors, makers, small businesses, and visitors.

    External Relations & Fundraising

    • Serve as the Museum’s public voice, representing its mission to community groups, civic leaders, funders, and the press.
    • Lead fundraising and development efforts in partnership with staff, cultivating major donors and long-term relationships.
    • Guide storytelling, digital communications, branding, and marketing to elevate the Museum’s profile.

    Operations & Financial Management

    • Oversee organizational operations, including facilities, contracts, systems, and earned revenue activities.
    • Prepare and manage the annual budget, ensuring transparency and long-term financial health.
    • Support and mentor staff, fostering a collaborative, accountable, and values-aligned culture.

    Experience, Skills and Qualities

The most competitive applicants will have many of the following attributes:

    • 5+ years of progressive leadership experience in nonprofits, public sector, or entrepreneurial settings; experience with historic sites or related cultural institutions is highly valued.
    • Passion for history, cultural storytelling, and community-building.
    • Business acumen, including a working understanding of nonprofit financial management, contract negotiations, IT systems, marketing, and human resources; experience with sales operations or other innovative earned revenue programs is highly valued.
    • Accomplished people manager with a gift for fostering a culture of accountability, successful delegation, high performance, and effective internal communication with a small team.
    • Successful record of fundraising, including cultivating major gifts and nurturing long-term donor relationships.
    • Experience cultivating and stewarding community partnerships and civic engagement.
    • Strong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and a collaborative leadership style.
