Social isolation is an epidemic in the U.S. and according to research, more than 1/3 of people over 45 are lonely and 1/4 of people over 65 are socially isolated. At Seniors Helping Seniors of Greater Boston & Metrowest, we operate under a mission-driven business model of peers-helping-peers that provides older adults/retirees an employment opportunity to help socially-isolated seniors in our communities stay engaged. Connecting seniors with personal helpers/companions who are at the same stage of life makes the transition to accepting help easier. Services include a range of nonmedical care and assistance, such as companionship, transportation, shopping, activities, and household tasks. For the seniors receiving services, the help we provide increases their social interactions and allows them to remain in their homes and live independently for as long as possible. For the older adults we employ to provide services – some of whom are socially isolated themselves – it’s a wonderful way to stay engaged in retirement, supplement income, and give back to the community through purposeful work.
