Department of Human Rights

Purpose Statement

The Iowa Department of Human Rights’ Positive Youth Development initiative will remove barriers to leadership for historically underrepresented youth by empowering youth to realize their leadership capabilities and by challenging adults to recognize and engage youth leaders. The department will equip youth with the tools to communicate their vision, inspire collaboration and make significant contributions that result in positive change. DHR has a unique statewide responsibility to give youth a voice in government and promote the inclusion of diverse perspectives in decision making.

Goals

• DHR Youth Initiative participants will demonstrate ability to communicate the desired message to the appropriate audience.
• Students will understand and experience the value of community and civic engagement and its impact.
• Participants will demonstrate knowledge in financial and interpersonal skills to overcome historical leadership barriers.
• The DHR Youth initiatives will provide adult leaders the information and opportunity to engage value and incorporate the voice of young people on their ongoing decision making.
