    Position Description

The ESOL Teacher will be responsible for teaching English to adult students who are parents of young children. Meeting in-person and online, our innovative program is supplemented by volunteers who support speaking and vocabulary activities both in and outside of the classroom and frequent Parent Workshops that are team-taught.

Classes are designed for immigrant parents of young children and center the lived experiences, identities, and goals of caregivers. Grounded in a two-generation approach, the English For Parents (EFP) curriculum helps parents develop English language skills while strengthening their role as their child’s first teacher. Each lesson connects language instruction to real-life applications—supporting communication with doctors and teachers, engaging in early childhood development, building literacy routines at home, and navigating public systems. Through a combination of teacher-led instruction and one-on-one tutoring, parents gain confidence, build community, and advance toward long-term goals in education, employment, and family leadership. By focusing on parents’ needs and strengths, the program builds their capacity and knowledge to guide and support their children’s academic success.

    Responsibilities

    • Teach three hybrid (online and in-person) classes (18 instructional hours per week) during the Fall-Spring that can be in-person, online or hybrid, and are willing to be on-site in any of our partner sites throughout NYC
    • Represent Literacy Partners at partner meetings to strengthen ESOL programming
    • Collaborate with the ESOL teacher team and program manager to develop, adapt and execute level appropriate lesson plans which provide contextualized learning and address various learning styles
    • Maintain a class atmosphere that is culturally responsive and inclusive
    • Work with Health Equity Manager and support staff to ensure that parents’ nonacademic needs are met
    • Manage in-class volunteers and interns and integrate them meaningfully into the lessons
    • Report on key indicators of students’ progress using BEST Plus testing, registration information, and student surveys
    • Coordinate with staff and external organizations to ensure sufficient enrollment in classes and availability of additional services
    • Participate in Community of Practice sessions with the teaching team, monthly online gatherings of students, and professional development opportunities

    Qualifications and Requirements:

    • Minimum two-year experience teaching ESOL to adult students (preferably parents of young children and lower-level learners)

    • TESOL certification required, Master’s Degree in TESOL preferred
    • Best Plus 3.0 certification preferred

    • Experience creating and developing culturally relevant, appreciative, and representative curriculum and content that center the lives of the parents in the ESOL classroom
    • Bilingual in English and Spanish
