    Open New York (ONY) is a grassroots, non-profit organization advocating for abundant homes and lower rent. With an expected budget of $3M in 2025 and a staff of 11 (and growing), ONY seeks to implement local and statewide policy changes that expand housing options for all New Yorkers. From Rochester to the Rockaways, ONY is organizing to pass innovative and necessary legislation to finally dig New York State out of its decades-long housing crisis.

    About the Position

    The Deputy Chief of Staff (Deputy COS) will be a key member of the Operations team, reporting directly to the Chief of Staff. This role will focus on project management, internal alignment, and supporting effective cross-functional communication across departments. The Deputy COS will help ensure that staff and teams are well-informed, strategically aligned, and equipped to execute Open New York’s mission and goals.

    This is an ideal position for someone with strong project management and organizational skills who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and is passionate about building internal systems that foster communication, accountability, and cohesion across a growing team.

    Responsibilities

    Project Management & Organizational Coordination

    • Support the Chief of Staff in tracking organizational priorities, projects, and initiatives across departments.
    • Drive implementation of key cross-functional projects, ensuring timelines, deliverables, and accountability are clear.
    • Develop and maintain project tracking tools and dashboards to ensure visibility into organizational progress.

    Departmental Support & Success

    • Partner with department leads to ensure they have the tools, resources, and information necessary to meet their goals and communicate progress effectively.
    • Collaborate on the design and implementation of internal communications strategies and materials.
    • Provide logistical and planning support for key internal processes such as strategic planning sessions, all-staff meetings, and departmental goal-setting.

    Strategic & Operational Support

    • Serve as a thought partner to the Chief of Staff on internal processes.
    • Create and maintain organizational systems and tools related to HR operations, including employee time tracking, hiring, benefits documentation, and onboarding processes.
    • Maintain and update internal policies and the employee manual in collaboration with the Chief of Staff and relevant stakeholders.
    • Plan and support internal team events, retreats, and meetings to strengthen staff culture and alignment.

    The ideal candidate will have

    • 3+ years of experience in operations, project management, internal communications, or a related field.
    • Demonstrated experience managing complex, cross-functional projects in a mission-driven organization.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Strong organizational and time management skills with a keen attention to detail.
    • Ability to build relationships across teams and levels of seniority.
    • Proactive problem-solver with a collaborative, team-oriented approach.
    • Passion for Open New York’s mission to fight for equitable development that expands all housing options for New Yorkers

    Additional Information

    This a full time, exempt position, with a salary range of $75,000 - $95,000 per year. The position is based in New York City and ONY operates as a hybrid team, with three days per week in our office in Tribeca.
