    Descrição

Since 1979, Literacy New Jersey (formerly Literacy Volunteers of New Jersey) has been committed to strengthening New Jersey’s workforce, families and communities by ensuring that free, high quality literacy instruction is available to low literate adults in every New Jersey community.

Literacy New Jersey provides free instruction to adults who need help with reading, writing, math and speaking English. Trained volunteer tutors work with adults one-to-one or in small groups to help them improve their language and literacy skills so they can reach their life goals. Our students are at the lowest levels of literacy, including those who seek to learn English as a Second Language, improve their basic reading and writing skills, prepare to obtain their High School Equivalency diplomas, or become U.S. citizens.

We are currently seeking a Literacy Specialist for Literacy NJ West Hudson. The Literacy Specialist is responsible for providing high-quality instruction while supporting student success, program development, community engagement, and contributing to fundraising efforts.

Primary responsibilities include teaching classes for groups of adult learners at least twice per week; training will be provided. The Literacy Specialist will be expected to support the director in identifying and carrying out improvements to volunteer recruitment, support, and management, along with creation of newsletters, flyers, and other program materials. Responsibilities also include assisting in the development of community partnerships to expand student services and program opportunities, assisting learners in achieving their educational, employment, and personal goals, and overseeing a caseload of tutor-student matches. Comfort with accessing and maintaining an online database management system is required; training will be provided.

The Literacy Specialist will work primarily on-site in our Kearny office, but may be required to travel to Hoboken; some remote hours possible. Scheduling flexibility and willingness to work 1-2 evenings a week required.

    Qualifications:

    • B.A. or equivalent from an accredited college or university.
    • Minimum of three years of experience in supervision of a non-profit organization and in volunteer supervision. Advanced skills may be substituted for experience. Interest/experience in adult literacy preferred.
    • Willingness to work flexible hours, including one evening per week.
    • Computer literacy: Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, email. Ability to learn database management software (LACES).
    • Possession of a driver’s license valid in New Jersey is required as the operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
    • Knowledge of program policies, procedures and practices and the ability to effectively communicate the same to others.
    • Communicate clearly and effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
    • Ability to research and prepare accurate and comprehensive reports containing statistical, operational or other analysis that result in findings, conclusions and recommendations.
    • Ability to write grants and other fundraising documents, correspondence, media materials, newsletters and memoranda.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.
    • Ability to effectively prioritize and organize assigned work, analyze problems, develop effective work methods and meet deadlines.
    • Ability to operate office equipment, computers and software in an effective manner.
    • Ability to maintain a poised and professional demeanor which includes sensitivity to cultural diversity, and to represent the program in a professional manner.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with Program Director, COO, CEO, and statewide team.
