The Human Resources Director is responsible for planning, developing, and managing the human resources functions of Veterans Group United (VGU). This position oversees employee and volunteer relations, recruitment, onboarding, personnel records, policy development, compliance, training, performance management, and organizational culture. The HR Director ensures that VGU maintains a professional, ethical, and compliant workforce while supporting the organization’s mission of serving veterans, service members, and military families.
Volunteer Position
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Human Resources Management
- Develop, implement, and maintain human resources policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local employment laws.
- Maintain personnel files and confidential employee records.
- Assist leadership with organizational planning and workforce development.
- Provide guidance to managers and supervisors regarding personnel matters.
Recruitment and Staffing
- Coordinate recruitment efforts for employees, interns, and volunteers.
- Develop job descriptions and position announcements.
- Conduct applicant screenings and assist with interviews.
- Coordinate onboarding and orientation for new personnel.
- Maintain staffing records and organizational charts.
Volunteer Management
- Develop volunteer recruitment and retention strategies.
- Maintain volunteer records and service documentation.
- Coordinate volunteer onboarding, training, and recognition programs.
- Ensure volunteers understand organizational policies and expectations.
Employee Relations
- Promote a positive and professional workplace culture.
- Address employee concerns and facilitate conflict resolution.
- Assist leadership with performance evaluations and disciplinary actions.
- Support employee engagement and retention initiatives.
Training and Development
- Coordinate staff and volunteer training programs.
- Ensure personnel complete required compliance and safety training.
- Identify professional development opportunities.
- Maintain training records and certifications.
Compliance and Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) requirements.
- Maintain confidentiality of personnel information.
- Support organizational compliance with grant requirements and nonprofit regulations.
- Assist with workplace safety policies and reporting requirements.
- Monitor changes in employment laws and recommend policy updates.
Administrative Support
- Prepare HR-related reports for executive leadership and the Board of Directors.
- Assist with employee benefits administration when applicable.
- Maintain HR databases and personnel tracking systems.
- Support grant-funded staffing initiatives and reporting requirements.
Qualifications
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field.
- Human Resources certification (SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or equivalent) preferred.
- Experience in nonprofit, military, veteran services, or community organizations preferred.
- Experience managing volunteers and staff.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of employment laws and HR best practices.
- Excellent organizational and recordkeeping skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication abilities.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and HR management systems.
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, community partners, and leadership.
