Project Manager for "Artificial Intelligence and Genetic Engineering"

“Save Our Seeds” is a European initiative of the Foundation on Future Farming (Zukunftsstiftung

Landwirtschaft) within the GLS Treuhand e.V. to promote agroecological solutions and critical

engagement with genetic engineering in agriculture.

The project

Save Our Seeds is lookingf for a motivated person to lead our new project, “Genetic Engineering and Artificial Intelligence.”

The convergence of biological and machine intelligence is the basis of a new technological wave that will bring about enormous scientific, cultural, political, and economic changes. This is where our project comes in: it is about education, information, debate, and a common understanding of this development.

• What should we expect when machines will soon be able to design and produce genetically modified organisms?
• How should we deal with their ability to identify patterns in the oceans of data that make up life?
• What new insights can we expect from the use of learning machines?
• What opportunities and risks does this entail?
• How can we ensure that the public debate on these issues is informed and constructive?
• Which rules should companies and scientific institutions adhere to, and which principles and goals should they follow? Are there any red lines?

We want to remain calm despite heated discussions full of half truths and fantasies. We want to know about the actual benefits and realistic dangers for our community, despite breathtaking, highly speculative investments by tech billionaires who aren't known for their passion for democracy. Our aim is to empower all those affected by the coming wave in agriculture, food, and environmental protection to participate in the debate on the basis of solid knowledge and to contribute their expertise.

Your profile

• You are familiar with both artificial intelligence and molecular biology to the extent that you can follow scientific literature and technological discussions and communicate their content in a way that interested laypeople can understand.
• Your alert, critical mind knows no taboos or reservations. You believe in the power of open debate and in the ability of people to shape their own futures.
• Complexity stimulates your imagination and your passion for communication. Perhaps you're interested in the chance to look at a subject you've already worked on in some detail from a fresh perspective.
• You're confident in your ability to bring different stakeholders to the table and ideally already have your own network.
• What's more, you are willing and able to tackle the fundamental questions surrounding one of the greatest civilisational, technological, and ecological challenges of our time.
• You are fluent in English and familiar with the essential cultural techniques of personal and virtual communication.

What we offer

• Management of a project for an initial period of two years with the possibility of extension.
• A full time position with appropriate remuneration.
• A small, dedicated team based in Berlin, Hamburg, and Brussels without excessive location restrictions and with a high degree of individual responsibility.
• A project budget to develop and implement your concept.
