    Illinois Workers in Action (IWA) mission is to empower workers through education, organizing, policy, solidarity, worker power, develop leadership in the workplace, and offer resources to families and the community.

    Illinois Workers in Action was established to drive workplace change for all employees, regardless of their employment and immigration status. Its mission is to equip every worker with the essential tools needed to thrive in their work environment. Beyond educating and supporting workers, Illinois Workers in Action is dedicated to uniting and empowering the Latinx and Black communities and offering resources for the whole family, not just workers.

    About This Role

    Illinois Workers in Action is looking for a committed and community-oriented individual to take on the position of Program Coordinator for IWA’s Family Literacy Program. This part-time role is suited for someone dedicated to uplifting immigrant families through education and empowerment. The Program Coordinator's primary responsibilities include coordinating the 5 components of the Family Literacy Program and supporting the literacy development of participating families.

    In addition to coordinating the Family Literacy Program, the Program Coordinator will support IWA’s broader immigration and community services work. This includes helping immigrant families connect to trusted resources, supporting immigration-related outreach and educational activities, assisting with Know Your Rights and family preparedness initiatives, and helping families navigate referrals to IWA’s immigration legal services and other community resources. The Coordinator will work closely with IWA staff to ensure families receive culturally responsive, accessible, and timely support.

    Core Responsibilities

    • Facilitate childcare/children’s education and coordinate library services, Interactive Literacy Activities, and parent workshops
    • Communicate with Adult Education, school, and library partners on a regular basis to ensure a smooth partnership.
    • Communicate with family participants on a regular basis to foster community, build a system of support, and encourage participation in program components.
    • Plan events, activities, and trips; record attendance and participation data.
    • Assist with quarterly program reports and annual grant application.
    • Support Adult Education instructor as needed.
    • Support immigration-related outreach, Know Your Rights education, family preparedness activities, community events, and other immigrant-family initiatives led by IWA.
    • Assist families with connecting to IWA’s immigration services and trusted community resources, including referrals and follow-up as appropriate.

    Required Qualifications

    • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work effectively with people of diverse social, faith, economic, and racial / ethnic backgrounds.
    • 1-2 years’ experience working with youth, families, or in a non-profit community-based organization.
    • Proficiency in computer use for documentation, reporting, and communication purposes
    • Bilingual in Spanish/English strongly preferred for communication abilities, interpretation, and correspondence.
    • Ability to work well under pressure, multi-task, and meet established timelines and goals.
    • Excellent organization and communication skills.
    • Willingness to have a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
