    Victim Advocate & Community Engagement Coordinator

    The Center for Sexual Assault Survivors

    Reports To: Program Manager and/or Executive Director

    Salary Range: $45,000-$55,000, Full-Time, Exempt Position

    Location: 11838 Rock Landing Drive, Suite 220, Newport News, VA

    Position Summary

    The Victim Advocate & Community Engagement Coordinator provides trauma-informed advocacy and support services to survivors of sexual assault and their loved ones while strengthening community awareness, partnerships, and prevention efforts. This position serves as a direct support resource for survivors and acts as a liaison between The Center for Sexual Assault Survivors and community stakeholders to increase access to services, education, and engagement. This position is also part of the on-call staff rotation providing 24-hour crisis response for The Center’s hotline.

    The ideal candidate is compassionate, organized, culturally responsive, and committed to survivor-centered advocacy and community empowerment.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Victim Advocacy & Survivor Support

      • Provide trauma-informed, survivor-centered advocacy to individuals impacted by sexual assault and related trauma.
      • Conduct intake, needs assessments, safety planning, and crisis intervention services.
      • Offer emotional support, information, referrals, and assistance navigating medical, legal, law enforcement, and social service systems.
      • Accompany survivors to hospitals for forensic exams, court proceedings, law enforcement interviews, or other appointments as needed.
      • Maintain confidential case documentation and records in accordance with agency policies, grant requirements, and applicable laws.
      • Provide follow-up support and ongoing case management to survivors.
      • Participate in on-call advocacy or crisis response services, if applicable.

    Community Engagement & Outreach

      • Develop and maintain strong relationships with community partners, schools, healthcare providers, law enforcement agencies, colleges/universities, faith organizations, and local businesses.
      • Coordinate outreach activities to increase awareness of sexual violence prevention, survivor services, and agency programs.
      • Represent The Center for Sexual Assault Survivors at community events, resource fairs, speaking engagements, and collaborative meetings.
      • Assist with planning and implementation of awareness campaigns, community education initiatives, and special events (e.g., Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Denim Day, fundraising/community events).
      • Support volunteer and community engagement efforts by helping recruit, coordinate, and recognize volunteers.
      • Create and distribute outreach materials and assist with social media and community messaging to increase visibility of services.
      • Track outreach activities and maintain community engagement data for reporting purposes.

    Administrative & Program Support

      • Maintain accurate and timely program documentation, case notes, and reports.
      • Collect and report program outcomes and data required for grants and funding sources.
      • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, case consultations, and professional development opportunities.
      • Ensure compliance with agency policies, confidentiality standards, and trauma-informed best practices.
      • Assist with agency initiatives, strategic goals, and special projects as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Required:

      • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Public Health, Communications, or related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
      • Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in victim advocacy, crisis intervention, case management, nonprofit services, or community outreach.
      • Knowledge of trauma-informed care, sexual violence dynamics, crisis response, and survivor advocacy.
      • Strong interpersonal, public speaking, and relationship-building skills.
      • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in sensitive situations.
      • Strong organizational and time management skills.
      • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, databases, and communication platforms.
      • Reliable transportation and ability to travel locally for outreach, advocacy, and events.
      • Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends for crisis response, outreach, or events.

    Preferred:

      • Experience working with survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, or trauma.
      • Crisis intervention or victim advocacy certification/training.
