    Job Title: Finance Associate

    Job Type: Full-Time, Non-Exempt Salaried

    About Us:

    Row New York is a sports-based youth development non-profit organization founded on the premise that the discipline and teamwork that rowing instills, when combined with rigorous academic support, has the power to change lives. At full capacity, our Youth Program serves over 175 high school student-athletes from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. It is a high dosage, year-round rowing and academic program with a goal of ensuring that 100% of our young people graduate high school and matriculate to college or begin an alternative post-secondary plan. In addition, we offer rowing to New Yorkers of all ages who are either

    people with physical or cognitive disabilities, military veterans, or local community members. Lastly, Row New York offers summer camps and a fee-for-service rowing program for New York City independent high schools. Our programs are offered at two rowing sites: Upper Manhattan and Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

    Position Summary:

    The Finance Associate is a member of Row New York’s administrative staff and plays a critical role in supporting the organization’s financial processes and ensuring its financial integrity. Working closely with the Senior Director of Finance, the Finance Associate helps carry out the organization’s day to day fiscal functions and is responsible for the timely and accurate entry of financial information into Row New York’s finance systems, assisting with financial controls, and supporting monthly closing and audit processes, among other responsibilities.

    An ideal candidate has the highest level of integrity, attention to detail, organizational skills, and is deadline driven. The Finance Associate should be comfortable working independently and also value being part of a team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone wanting exposure to all aspects of nonprofit finance in a unique sports and youth development organization that values and prioritizes teamwork, respect, equity, and belonging.

    This position is primarily remote but requires attendance at in-person staff meetings and trainings. Local residency in the New York City metro-area is required.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Carry out general bookkeeping functions and ensure the integrity and accuracy of all bank transactions, including payments and cash deposits
    • Manage and execute the organization’s A/P function, including processing billpay and ACH transactions, and coordinating monthly credit card transaction coding, approvals and receipt collection, ensuring strict adherence to process and deadlines
    • Assist in maintaining compliance with fiscal policies and procedures; train staff on expense reimbursement and credit card procedures, and support staff in carrying out purchasing and vendor payments
    • Ensure proper documentation and retention of financial transactions and records
    • Manage and execute fee invoicing and collection of fee-for-service revenue; interface with program staff and participants’ families relating to program fee collection; track payment plans
    • Support the timely and accurate closing of books on a monthly basis, ensuring the Fund E-Z cash register matches bank online statement
    • Collaborate with development and fundraising staff to reconcile revenue on a monthly basis
    • Assist with preparation of monthly internal financial reports used by senior management to track revenue and expenses
    • Support the annual external audit process by providing backup documents and file annual 1099 return
    • Provide assistance on other finance-related projects and perform analytical duties as assigned based on departmental and organizational needs

    Qualifications:

    • Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree in a related field strongly preferred but not required; equivalent work experience will be considered
    • At least one year of non-profit finance or bookkeeping experience strongly preferred
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate with patience, tact and sensitivity with diverse stakeholders
    • Exceedingly detail-oriented with the ability to complete tasks accurately and in a timely manner with minimal supervision
    • Excellent organizational skills; ability to independently manage and meet deadlines and handle multiple projects at once
    • Ability to work cooperatively across all levels of the organization with a strong customer service approach
    • High level of professionalism and ethics, including maintaining strict confidentiality and discretion with sensitive information
    • Commitment to building and/or deepening knowledge of equity and inclusion practices
    • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and/or Google Sheets; experience with Fund E-Z or other accounting software a plus
    • Proficiency using Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, etc.) and Zoom on a computer
