    POSITION PROFILE

Institute for Exceptional Care (IEC, www.ie-care.org) is a non-profit organization committed to making healthcare better and safer for people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) so they can live their best, dignified lives. IEC places people with IDD at the center of all our work, building partnerships with IDD advocates and healthcare leaders to prepare clinicians, to change how healthcare organizations serve people with IDD, and help insurers and government use their influence to improve the health of people with IDD.

    POSITION SUMMARY

IEC is seeking a highly qualified Director of Development or Chief Advancement Officer to manage and implement a strategic vision for our comprehensive fundraising program in partnership with our CEO, COO/CFO, Communications Manager, and Board of Directors. This is a critical leadership role that will allow you to bring your expertise and creativity and help drive organizational growth and impact across the United States.

As the Director or Chief Advancement Officer, you will be responsible for maturing a fund development program, creating annual development plans, and deepening alliances with institutional funders and high-net-worth individuals to ensure the financial sustainability of IEC. We are looking for a high-energy, innovative, and accomplished professional who can bring the gravitas and strategy necessary to drive our fundraising efforts.

In addition to leading our fundraising efforts, you will work closely with our leadership team and staff, to identify new opportunities for growth and impact, build strong partnerships with key stakeholders, and promote our work and mission to multiple audiences.

    YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR…

    Strategic Fundraising Plan

    • Lead and manage the organization's overall development efforts, including developing and managing an annual $2M+ fundraising plan that includes a cycle of activities targeting individuals and foundations to achieve the revenue goal, and raising an annual unrestricted budget with annual targets established by the Board.
    • Develop a growing major gifts program by managing and improving necessary systems, processes, and tools, including executing solicitation and stewardship strategies for assigned major donors making gifts of >$10,000.
    • Support and grow IEC’s foundation and institutional relationships, ensuring effective engagement and cultivation of potential funders, including grant writing and proposal creation, and meeting key deadlines for restricted grants and deliverables.
    • Create systems and processes to cultivate, steward, and acknowledge funders through strategic relationship management, inclusive of personalized and timely correspondence and in-person visits.

    Board Engagement

    • Work alongside IEC’s Board Development Committee, COO/CFO, CEO, and Communications Manager to implement IEC’s annual development plan and strategy.
    • Support Board members to identify, cultivate, and steward funders throughout the solicitation cycle.
    • Train and coach Board members in using talking points, fundraising materials, and stewardship practices to engage and deepen authentic relationships for IEC.
    • Provide reports to CEO, COO/CFO, and Board, including annual and quarterly funding goals, and metrics for fundraising performance.

    Development Operations

    • In concert with IEC’s COO/CFO and CEO, develop the Annual FY Budget.
    • Train IEC team members in grant writing, proposal creation, best practices in stewardship, and use of talking points and other collaterals to optimize successful fundraising.
    • Collaborate with the CEO and IEC’s Communications Manager on funder communications, including annual appeals, annual reports, newsletters, case-for-support one-pagers, proposals, and impact reports.
    • Supervise and manage Salesforce, Soapbox, and associated fundraising platforms. Collaborate with IEC’s COO/CFO and staff on queries, reports, exports, and any other data as needed.
    • Track and ensure timely submission of high-quality grant submissions, reports, and deliverables.
    • Direct a Program Manager (30% FTE) to support development operations.

    YOU MUST HAVE…

    • Passion for supporting a small, innovative organization.
    • Minimum of 8 years of fundraising experience (development, advancement, philanthropy) with increasing levels of responsibility.
    • Management or leadership experience preferred with a demonstrated track record in developing and leading staff to achieve results.
    • Experience successfully cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts ($10,000+), including relationship-building with high-network individuals and foundations.
    • Understanding of relationship management processes, pipelines, and tracking mechanisms within a CRM environment (e.g., Salesforce) to manage donor pipelines.
    • Strong project management skills to ensure discipline and support a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization.
    • Demonstrated ability to operate with high urgency, self-motivation, focus on goals, and commitment to high-quality work.
    • Ability to effectively deliver and receive both positive and constructive feedback.
    • Commitment to IEC’s mission-driven work.
    • Familiarity with healthcare and/or disability strongly preferred.

    COVID-19 VACCINE POLICY

IEC’s COVID-19 Vaccine Policy requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 unless a medical or religious exemption is approved. As a condition of employment, newly hired employees must provide proof of their COVID-19 vaccination.

    LOCATION AND TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

This role may require up to 10% of business travel, including conferences, training, donor and prospectus funder meetings, and organizational retreats. IEC is currently a fully virtual organization but has occasional in-person staff meetings in Washington D.C. and compensates for travel and lodging costs.

While the position is virtual, all team members are expected to be available for meetings beginning at 10am EST during work days.

The hiring range for this role is $150,000-$175,000. Final offers for this position will be based upon several factors, including the scope of the role, market compensation analysis, position requirements, candidate’s experience level and capabilities, specific candidate geographic location, and internal pay equity considerations within the parameters of IEC’s compensation framework and philosophy.
