Reporting to the Executive Director, the Development Manager is responsible for leading and executing a comprehensive fundraising strategy to support HANJ’s $1M annual operating budget and long-term sustainability. This role will build and manage diversified revenue streams including individual giving, foundation and corporate grants, sponsorships, and special events, while strengthening donor stewardship and board engagement in fundraising.
This is a hands-on, growth-oriented role suited for a builder who can both strategize and execute.
Key Responsibilities
- Development Strategy & Revenue Growth
- Develop and execute a comprehensive annual development plan with measurable revenue goals across:
- Individual giving (annual campaign, Giving Tuesday)
- Major gifts
- Grants (foundation, corporate, government)
- Corporate sponsorships
- Special events (Walk/Run and other initiatives)
- In-kind and emerging opportunities
- Partner with the Executive Director and Board to strengthen board engagement in fundraising.
- Identify revenue risks and proactively adjust strategy to meet or exceed targets.
- Evaluate and implement new fundraising channels when appropriate (planned giving, direct mail expansion, digital campaigns, peer-to-peer, etc.).
- Set and monitor the development budget and revenue projections.
Financial Oversight & Organizational Leadership
- Contribute to the annual budget; work with ED to prepare report that contains accurate and relevant data to share information with Board and other stakeholders.
- Research and draft briefings for ED in advance of HANJ Board meetings.
- Monitor restricted funds and grant spending in partnership with finance support.
- Prepare development reports for Board meetings.
- Maintain accurate fundraising metrics and dashboards.
- Liaise with bookkeeper and other HANJ staff to monitor grant spending.
- Development Execution & Donor Management
- Manage donor pipeline including identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
- Conduct major gift cultivation and face-to-face solicitations.
- Write and submit grant proposals; manage grant reporting and compliance.
- Draft and oversee appeal campaigns (direct mail and digital).
- Lead sponsorship strategy including prospecting, packaging, and fulfillment.
- Oversee donor recognition and stewardship communications.
- Manage and enhance donor database systems (e.g., Bloomerang or similar CRM).
Events & Community Engagement
- Lead planning and revenue strategy for signature fundraising events including the Walk/Run.
- Ensure events meet or exceed financial and community engagement goals.
- Identify opportunities to convert event participants into long-term donors.
- Increase HANJ visibility through coordinated communications and partnerships.
Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of 5 years of result-oriented fundraising and direct development experience.
- Superior leadership, organizational and planning skills.
- Proven record of face-to-face major gift solicitation and success in building positive relationships with a range of donors.
- Must be able to work independently, solve problems, handle confidential information and navigate sensitive situations.
- Effective communicator, both orally and in writing, with a broad range of internal and external constituents.
- Must be able to operate with purpose, urgency, and accuracy in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment.
- Ability to analyze administrative, personnel and organizational problems and identify appropriate solutions.
- Demonstrated proficiency working with fundraising databases, such as Bloomerang.
- Proficient in Spanish a plus.
- Foundation relations or comparable work with foundation experience in a nonprofit setting, preferred.
- Organization, time management, attention to detail.
- Ability to travel and work some nights and weekends.
- Access to a reliable and insured vehicle to travel to and from offsite events.
