Job description:
About the Health Justice Initiative
Health Justice Initiative (HJI) is a Brooklyn‑rooted nonprofit working at the intersection of health, law, and community power. We provide legal services, health justice education, and systems‑level advocacy to address the everyday legal and structural barriers to health care. We are in an early stage of growth and building programs in legal services, community education, and a developing Health Navigator initiative.
This is a unique opportunity to join a small, mission‑driven organization at a formative moment and to help build the systems, relationships, and infrastructure that will shape HJI’s future.
About the Role
HJI is seeking a Development & Partnerships Coordinator to support fundraising, partnership cultivation, and day‑to‑day coordination. This role is ideal for an early‑career professional who is organized, relational, and excited to help build a young nonprofit from the ground up.
You will work closely with the Founder/Executive Director to strengthen HJI’s development pipeline, deepen relationships with community partners, and ensure that the organization’s work flows smoothly. This is a hands‑on role with room to grow.
Key Responsibilities

- Research NYC‑based foundations and donors aligned with health justice, legal empowerment, and community health
- Draft simple LOIs, donor outreach emails, and sections of grant applications
- Maintain HJI’s grant calendar, deadlines, and submission tracking
- Support donor stewardship (thank‑you notes, updates, small events)
Partnerships & External Engagement
- Map and track partnerships with Brooklyn CBOs, clinics, legal organizations, and community partners
- Conduct warm outreach to potential partners and schedule meetings
- Draft follow‑up emails and maintain relationship notes
- Prepare the Executive Director for meetings with briefs, summaries, and materials
Communications & Materials
- Update HJI’s one‑pager, pitch deck, and program descriptions
- Draft simple newsletters or social media posts (optional)
- Support storytelling and impact documentation
Operations & Coordination
- Manage the info@ inbox and triage inquiries
- Support scheduling and calendar management
- Assist with program logistics and basic administrative tasks
- Maintain simple systems (Google Drive, Airtable/CRM, etc.)
Who You Are
- 1–4 years of experience in nonprofits, development, community engagement, or program coordination

- Comfortable reaching out to new people and building relationships
- Interested in health justice, legal empowerment, or community health
- Able to manage multiple small tasks and keep things moving
- Warm, relational, and community‑oriented
- Excited to grow with a small, early‑stage organization
Compensation & Hours
- $25–$35/hour, depending on experience
- 15–20 hours/week, with flexibility
- Hybrid role; some NYC availability preferred for meetings and events
