Position Title: Youth Educator
Program: Mitchel Community Center – DYCD COMPASS Afterschool Program
Location: 210 Alexander Avenue, Bronx, NY 10454
Reports To: Program Director
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Seasonal
Salary: $20.00 per hour

Program Overview
The Mitchel Community Center COMPASS Afterschool Program, funded by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), provides high-quality after-school programming that supports the academic, social-emotional, and physical development of elementary school youth.
Students participate in engaging, hands-on activities including:
- STEM Education
- Arts & Crafts
- Leadership Development
- Literacy
- Physical Fitness & Recreation
- Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)
- Team Building
- Academic Support
- Family Engagement Activities
We are seeking enthusiastic, dependable, and creative Youth Educators who are passionate about making a positive impact in the lives of young people.
Position Summary
Youth Educators are responsible for creating a safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environment where youth can thrive. Staff members plan and facilitate enrichment activities, supervise participants, build positive relationships with families, and support the daily operations of the COMPASS program while maintaining compliance with DYCD and East Side House expectations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Youth Educators will:
- Plan and facilitate engaging, age-appropriate enrichment activities aligned with DYCD and East Side House Settlement program goals.
- Foster a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and respectful environment for all participants.
- Build positive relationships with youth, families, colleagues, school staff, and community partners.
- Supervise participants at all times to ensure their safety, well-being, and active engagement.
- Promote positive youth development through mentorship, encouragement, and relationship-building.
- Collaborate with program staff to implement high-quality programming and daily activities.
- Maintain clean, organized, and welcoming classrooms and activity spaces.
- Prepare, organize, and manage program materials, equipment, and supplies.
- Complete all required documentation accurately and on time, including:
- Daily attendance
- Incident reports
- Behavior documentation
- Activity reports
- Assist with student enrollment, administrative tasks, and daily program operations.
- Support family engagement events, field trips, special events, and community activities.
- Attend and actively participate in all required staff meetings, trainings, and professional development sessions.
- Uphold all East Side House Settlement, DYCD, DOE (when applicable), and program policies and procedures.
- Represent East Side House Settlement and the DYCD COMPASS Program professionally through positive communication, appropriate conduct, and ethical decision-making at all times.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Program Director or East Side House Settlement leadership. Duties and responsibilities are subject to change based on program, agency, or contractual needs.
Required Qualifications
Applicants must possess:
- High School Diploma or GED (required)
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience working with youth in urban communities
- Passion for youth development and education
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities
- Ability to lead activities in one or more enrichment areas, including:
- STEM
- Arts
- Leadership
- Literacy
- Recreation
- Media
- Ability to effectively supervise and motivate groups of children
- Dependability, flexibility, and willingness to receive feedback

Schedule
- Seasonal Part-Time Position
- Up to 20 hours per week
- Hours based on program needs
- Occasional evening, weekend, and professional development hours may be required
Required Clearances
Before employment, candidates must complete:
- Department of Health Fingerprinting
- State Central Registry (SCR) Clearance (Applicant Fee: $25)
- Staff Exclusion List (SEL) Clearance
- Department of Health Medical Clearance
- Health Statement
- Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination (if required by agency policy)
Required Online Trainings
Candidates must complete the following trainings:
Mandated Reporter Training (Approximately 2 Hours)
Foundations in Health & Safety (Approximately 5 Hours)

Work Environment
This position is performed in a school and community center setting and requires:
- Standing and walking for extended periods
- Speaking clearly with groups of children
- Light lifting of program materials and supplies
- Active participation in recreational and enrichment activities
- Daily engagement and supervision of youth
Travel Requirements
Local travel may be required for:
- Educational field trips
- Community events
- Program-sponsored activities
