    Position Summary

    Oil Change International (OCI) is seeking a full-time Communications Campaigner to coordinate and lead the communications work for our Global Public Finance team. This is a full-time permanent staff position.

    OCI’s Public Finance team is focused on securing the economic policies needed to secure a just transition away from fossil fuels. We engage in direct advocacy, campaigning, research, legal accountability and movement support to win public funding in support of a just transition, end public handouts to fossil fuels, and implement fair financial architecture reforms. To support this work, we maintain the energyfinance.org database with over 18,000 transactions on public finance for fossil fuel and renewable energy.

    The Communications Campaigner will work with our Public Finance Team, Communications Team, and coalition partners to make sure our research, campaigns, and messages reach the key targets and audiences in our efforts to secure a just transition away from fossil fuels.

    The Communications Campaigner is responsible for developing and implementing strategic communications, tools, and tactics to inform and support the campaign objectives of OCI’s Public Finance team. The Communications Campaigner works closely with the Public Finance team and OCI’s Core Communications Team, as well as with OCI’s other program team, external agencies as relevant, partners in target regions and countries and in global civil society networks.

    Essential Responsibilities

    Communications strategy development

    • Design and implement a cohesive communications strategy to support the Public Finance team reaching our target audiences, achieve campaign goals, and increasing movement engagement;
    • Collaborate with staff and coalition partners to inform messaging, project design, and outputs, including to support collective impact during key international political moments;
    • Engage with the broader Communications Team to make sure Public Finance Team priorities and needs are integrated into and aligned with OCI’s overall communications strategy;
    • Feed into organization wide strategy development processes where relevant.

    Content creation & dissemination

    • Create and commission impactful materials to reach engaged public and policy-maker audiences. This often requires translating technical concepts into compelling, timely, and energizing content. This could include writing press releases, fact sheets, messaging guides, emails to supporters, blog posts, web content, ad-buys, social media content, graphics, videos, press conferences, partner toolkits, opinion pieces, websites, and more.
    • Project management of communications outputs as relevant;
    • Ensure content is aligned with campaign messaging and brand guidelines;
    • Use OCI’s communications platforms to disseminate campaign-related press releases, supporter emails, and social media posts;
    • Analyze metrics and digital ad campaign performance to improve our strategies and campaigns.

    Media outreach

    • Develop and maintain international and issue-specific press lists relevant to campaign targets in close coordination with OCI’s Communications Manager;
    • Build relationships with and pitch stories to reporters relevant to the Public Finance teams’ priority campaigns and initiatives, including in support of movement partners.

    Partner engagement and support

    • Collaborate with allies and partners within international and regional civil society networks to drive visibility to fossil fuel and economic justice policy announcements and campaigns;
    • Represent OCI in relevant coalition communications-focused working groups and meetings;
    • Coordinate with and lend communications support and capacity to partner organizations engaged in campaigns to win fair energy finance policies.

    Administrative

    • Update and maintain work plans;
    • Participate in team and staff meetings;
    • Help maintain our shared calendar of upcoming projects and deadlines;
    • Respond to administrative requests in a timely and courteous manner.

    This is a remote working position. Preferred location is in Africa, Europe, or East Coast Americas to facilitate collaboration with OCI Public Finance team members.

    Travel: up to 4 weeks per year.

    Experience Requirements:

    Required Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities:

    • 3+ years working in a communications-oriented role;
    • Strong writing skills, including translating complex information into easily digestible content tailored to a target audience;
    • Strong verbal and interpersonal communications skills;
    • Strategic media communications experience, including: developing relationships with journalists, pitching stories and organizing press conferences, and writing media materials;
    • Digital campaigning experience, including: developing engaging social media strategies and audio-visual content;
    • Commitment to the mission of Oil Change International, passion for advocacy and campaigning, and a collaborative, team-oriented work style;
    • Alignment with OCI’s values, including especially sensitivity to issues of privilege, class, and race, and dedication to incorporating principles of justice into strategy and organizational work.

    Desired Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Experience working in coalitions and coordinating with civil society partners;
    • Experience working internationally;
    • Experience working at a climate, social, or economic justice oriented non-profit;
    • Familiarity with energy and economic policy.
