    Position Summary

    The Praxis Project is seeking an entry-level, organized, proactive, approachable individual who is eager to learn and grow in the field of Human Resources to join our team as a Human Resource Generalist (HR Generalist). The HR Generalist will be a trusted thought partner to the HR Team. This person will report to the Senior Director of Human Resources and under their direction, will serve as front line support for HR matters for our fiscal sponsorship and internal team members. This person will run the daily administrative functions of the Human Resource (HR) department, with an emphasis on helping Praxis to become an employer of choice - while prioritizing HR compliance and employee experience. This position is a great opportunity to expand skills across multiple human resource areas, organizational operations, and fiscal sponsorship, in a creative, dynamic environment dedicated to social justice and health equity!

    This is a full-time (40 hours per week), remote, fully benefits-eligible, non-exempt position, with a general work schedule of Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:30pm. Overnight travel may be required. The range for this position is $33.65 to $38.46 per hour. We use Nonprofit Compensation Associates compensation survey data for the San Francisco Bay Area and Bureau of Labor Statistics and other reputable indices.

    This is a fully remote position and can be performed from anywhere in the United States. Occasional, in person, out of state, overnight travel for team retreats and convenings may be required up to 4x per year. This role may require candidates to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Praxis provides regular Average Basic Increases (ABI) pay changes and substantial employee benefits beyond salary, taking a holistic approach to setting compensation.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    The HR Generalist will assist the HR Team by providing excellent service to all Praxis employees, will assist with HR programming, and provide general administrative support in various areas of HR, with an overall goal of helping to make Praxis an employer of Choice!

    Compliance

    • Review initial employment-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and supervisors, referring complex and/or sensitive matters to the appropriate staff.
    • Support the HR team as a liaison between the PEO (JustWorks) and various regulatory entities to ensure adherence to on time employment filings and compliance standing.
    • Assist with maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommend best practices.
    • Conduct regular research, maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law, and communicate updates to the HR team.
    • In coordination with the Sr. Director of Human Resources, request and organize necessary employment documentation from FSP contacts, as well as verify consistency between Praxis fiscal sponsorship practices.
    • Assist with implementing Reasonable Accommodation program; fulfill candidate and employee reasonable accommodation requests by ensuring candidates, employees, and partners have equitable access to participate in interviews, events, and/or perform their job-related duties.
    • Review, track, and document compliance with mandatory and non-mandatory training, continuing education, and work assessments. This may include safety training, anti-harassment training, professional licensure, and aptitude exams and certifications.
    • Ensure completion of I-9 documents and E-Verify submissions for all new hires and maintain accurate and compliant employee records.

    Employee Relations

    • Attend and participate in employee disciplinary meetings, such as terminations, corrective actions, and formal investigations and document key discussion points.
    • Participate in broader employee relations meetings (including those addressing workplace conflicts, complaints, or coaching needs) between staff, accurately document details, and when directed by the Sr. Director of Human Resource, provide concise meeting summaries.

    Performance Management

    • Support the implementation and ongoing administration of the organization's performance management process, including coordinating and tracking performance review cycles.
    • Monitor introductory periods for new hires by ensuring timely new hire check-ins are completed and properly documented.

    Employee Engagement

    • Assist with the design of engaging and creative activities (holiday, recognition, employee of the month, etc.) to boost employee morale, belonging and job-satisfaction.
    • Assist with developing processes for collecting anonymous employee feedback and provide recommendations to the HR Team.
    • In partnership with the Sr. Director of Human Resources, host HR drop-in sessions, and virtual round table discussions for all things HR.
    • Facilitate new hire onboarding sessions to inform new hires of benefits, company culture & values, and company structure (FSPs).

    Payroll & Benefits

    • Assist with processing of bi-weekly payroll by ensuring payroll changes and employee status updates are accurate for each pay period. This includes confirming that all stipends, allowances, and bonuses are paid and have proper documentation.
    • Understand the full scope of Praxis benefits and respond to benefits questions and support annual open enrollment.

    Administrative

    • Maintain general HR files and resources in an organized manner, using SharePoint and Justworks HRIS.
    • Prepare expense reports for the HR department expenses and submit to Finance in a timely manner.
    • Update and develop new HR templates in correlation to HR processes and procedures.
    • Support in general HR administration, such as answering employee inquiries and responding to requests about benefits, enrollments, terminations, and payroll.
    • Execute customer service functions, answering calls, and emails in a timely manner.
    • Assist with conducting regular payroll audits by reviewing employee status changes to understand impact on benefits and report to the HR Team.
    • Ensure accurate employee files and records, request missing information as needed, and update employee files as needed.
    • Maintain confidential files and templates for performance reviews, mediations, terminations, and on and off-boarding meetings.
    • In partnership with the Sr. Director of Human Resources, provide edits and recommendations for job descriptions.
    • Contribute to the update of FSP process manual, HR collateral, and the annual updates of the employee handbook.
    • Assist with logistics for HR events

    Qualifications, Education and Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field; or HR certification
    • Basic understanding of multi-state employment law basics
    • Strong organization and attention to detail
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Discretion and commitment to confidentiality
    • Previous experience in the non-profit industry

    • Willingness to support or help facilitate HR-related training sessions for staff or external partners, both virtually and in-person.

    • Demonstrates an eagerness to learn all aspects of HR and grow professionally in the field.
    • Maintains a high degree of integrity, honesty, and commitment to ethical workplace practices.

    Mental and physical demands

    • Fast-paced work environment.
    • High level of concentration and attention to detail required.
    • Time speaking and listening ranges between 25–50%.
    • Extended time sitting or standing, while at a computer.
    • Praxis currently works remotely both as an internal team and with our partners based across the United States. Leading and participating in remote video and telephone conferences is required.
    • Multiple video conferences per day with camera settings and video camera on.
    • Occasional travel (about one trip per quarter), including overnight travel is required; each trip potentially being 2 or more days per trip.
    • In-person team meetings and/or participation in local (in your hometown) networking events may be up to 4x per year.
    • Some exposure to hearing, seeing, or imagining traumatic events or social crises within the communities we serve.
    • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and insurance are required for employees driving on Praxis business; driving record checks may be required as well.
    • At times, under pressure to execute critical assignments, with a high level of detail, under strict timelines.
    • Sometimes left alone to determine how to juggle daily priorities, without requiring constant guidance from the Senior Director of Human Resources.
    • Extensive interaction and communication with colleagues and strangers, in person and virtual.
