    Organizational Overview:

    GreenRoots, Inc. is a grassroots community-based organization with a track record spanning over 30 years of achieving significant environmental justice and public health victories in Chelsea, East Boston, and the Greater Boston region. GreenRoots’ mission is to achieve environmental justice and a greater quality of life through collective action, unity, education, and youth leadership across neighborhoods and communities. We do so through organizing, deep community engagement and empowerment, youth leadership, and the implementation of innovative projects and campaigns.

    Job Overview:

    The Grant Writer will be an experienced development professional with a proven track record of identifying prospects and developing well-written grant proposals. The Grant Writer will work closely with the Director of Development and Executive Director to prospect grants; develop grant proposals that communicate GreenRoots’ mission and share GreenRoots’ work in powerful and compelling ways; and work with program directors to develop timely post-award grant reports. A demonstrated ability to project manage / organize work, foster relationships, and manage the grant life cycle is required. Strong storytelling skills and a respect for depicting our community in positive and resilient ways is required. This position reports to the Director of Development. The ideal candidate will be a proactive collaborator, detail-oriented, and a self-starter with a strong framework and understanding of environmental and social justice campaigns, systems change, and organizing strategies. This is an in-person role with the possibility of some remote work.

    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Understand grant preparation protocols, GreenRoots terminology, and GreenRoots programs.
    • Develop and submit high-quality grant proposals.
    • Carefully review RFPs, funder priorities and related documents to understand requirements and review criteria.
    • Ensure adherence to all submission guidelines.
    • Attend webinars on opportunities and strategize for successful and compelling narratives.
    • Participate in meetings with the Director of Development, Executive Director and possibly with program directors to strategize about the direction of proposals assigned.
    • Craft compelling grant submissions for environmental and social justice, food security, health equity and community organizing that depict the Chelsea and East Boston community in positive and resilient ways and use GreenRoots’ equity-centered language centered and program descriptions.
    • Track, manage and meet deadlines.
    • Update and track documents and prospects in GreenRoots filing systems per established protocols.
    • Identify (prospect) new opportunities with government entities, philanthropies, foundations, and corporations.
    • Keep up-to-date on trends in institutional giving, changes in funding priorities, and best practices in grant writing and fundraising.
    • Provide weekly updates to the Director of Development and Executive Director.
    • Attend weekly Development team meetings.

    The most qualified candidates will have the following skills and experiences:

    • Confident and strong grant writer, clear communicator, and a creative, collaborative thinker, able to successfully manage multiple deadlines with efficient organization and great interpersonal skills
    • Attention to detail and accuracy; administrative and coordination skills; project management skills; and a keen appreciation for confidentiality
    • Understanding of environmental and/or social justice challenges while centering community resilience
    • Experienced using Salesforce or a similar CRM
    • Positive and committed team player
    • Understanding and embodiment of antiracist and intersectional frameworks and practices
    • Respect for the dignity of all work and willingness to consider multiple points of view
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and able to learn new software and applications with confidence
    • Knowledge of / or experience in working for a community based organization
    • Experience managing federal and state grants, including familiarity with grants.gov & Commbuys
    • Ability to work some evenings and weekends
    • Ability to work under pressure and handle multiple projects simultaneously
    • Familiarity with Chelsea and East Boston is a plus

    Job Type: Contract, In-person with the possibility of being hybrid

    Compensation: $60-$65/hr, based on experience

    Commitment: 25 hours per week for 3-month contract, with the possibility of 6-month contract renewal
