    The Organization

    The Freedom Center is a new division of the Young Women’s Freedom Center (YWFC) that provides back-end infrastructure for YWFC and fiscal sponsorship for Sister Warriors Freedom Coalition and Beloved Village, organizations working toward a shared political vision aligned with our Freedom Charter.

    Founded on 30 years of work to end the criminalization and incarceration of women and trans people of all genders, the Freedom Center offers fiscal sponsorship, operational support, coaching, and training to projects led by systems-impacted people.

    The Position

    Reporting to the CFO, the Director of Finance will play a key leadership role on a small but mighty finance team. This person will be responsible for full-cycle contracts and grants management, payroll processing, internal reporting, and overseeing the Finance Fellow.

    This is a highly collaborative role requiring cross-functional work with the CFO, Executive Directors, Department Directors, and program staff.

    Responsibilities:

    • Contracts & Grants Management
      • Administer the complete life cycle of small and large state government and private grant contracts and subcontracts, including but not limited to managing grant financial reporting, monitoring the budget and spending status of assigned grants
      • Collaborate with program staff to prepare and manage grant budgets including initiating budget revisions or amendments as necessary
      • Prepare, complete, submit and ensure accuracy and timeliness of all financial and close-out reports for all grants. Assist with financial oversight and management of grant award funding and communicate with sponsors and funders on questions/issues.
      • Develop budgets for new grant proposals, monitor budget vs. actual results for individual grant programs on a monthly basis, and recommend grant budget revisions when needed.
      • Track and allocate indirect costs that are allocable to grant programs on a monthly basis, ensuring that all indirect costs allocated to each grant are allowable in accordance with grant provisions.
      • Oversee and track all payments to subcontractors for grant funded projects in accordance with budgets and subcontractor agreements.
      • Facilitate and participate in all audits related to grant finance and compliance
      • Maintain and update filing systems related to contracts and invoices, ensuring that documentation is well organized and easily accessible to relevant stakeholders
      • Provide ad hoc and periodic financial reporting on each award and program to program staff to support progress reporting to funding partners; implement process efficiencies and/or automation where possible
      • Create reports and dashboards to provide timely, accurate, and targeted data to organizational leaders, project managers, and the Board.
    • Financial reporting
      • Prepare monthly financial reports for internal budget owners;
      • Prepare month-end financial reports for Leadership team and the Board of Directors;
      • Prepare financial information & other reports for funders
    • Payroll
      • Review timesheets (bi-weekly)
      • Process bi-weekly payroll in Paycom
      • Review and prepare employee advance schedules
      • Prepare payroll allocation and check reconciliation (bi-weekly)
    • People management and training
      • Oversee, manage, and support the finance fellow
      • Help finance team members learn and grow
      • Support staff members in better understanding and managing nonprofit finances
    • Other finance and operations
      • Provide ad hoc operational support to the CFO, as needed
      • Lead special projects and perform other tasks as assigned by the CFO
      • Leverage emerging technologies and critical thinking skills to continually innovate and automate existing methodologies, processes, and reporting
      • Support with the development of financial policies and procedures

    Qualifications:

    Required Qualifications:

    • BA/BS degree in business administration, nonprofit financial management, economics, public administration, or accounting.
    • Demonstrated proficiency with a minimum of four years of hands-on experience in effectively managing grants and overseeing financial operations within the nonprofit sector. This includes working knowledge of grant management processes, budgeting, financial analysis and interpretation, financial reporting for a diversity of government and private funders, and relevant regulations and requirements to meet government reporting requirements for grant financial activities. Experience with the grant audit process for government awards.
    • Experience managing, supporting, and empowering a team of finance professionals.
    • Competency using accounting/financial software, spreadsheets, and data management systems.
    • Teamwork and collaboration: ability to build relationships, build trust, share ideas, and accomplish work. Possess a team oriented leadership style.
    • Excellent communication skills: demonstrates exceptional proficiency in conveying ideas and information through articulate written expressions and clear verbal communication, fostering effective and engaging interactions.
    • Highly organized, motivated, and detail-oriented: Plans ahead and finds alternative paths when needed to accomplish a task.
    • Critical thinking and problem-solving ability: adapts to the evolving needs of the organization and thinks ahead to develop solutions to challenges.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Proficiency with Sage Intacct accounting software
    • Experience building large complex budgets.
    • Experience designing and managing time tracking systems.
    • Experience with federal grants, including knowledge of 2 CFR 200 rules for Federal grant awards and experience preparing applications to the federal government to establish and renegotiate the organization’s federal indirect cost rate (NICRA)
    • Experience with the Single Audit process for federally funded awards.
