The Village of Love and Resistance (VOLAR) seeks a part-time Financial Manager to manage all accounting aspects of our small (and growing!) nonprofit organization. This is a part-time position of approximately 6- 8 hours per week, all virtual.
VOLAR’s mission is to co-create a cooperative community in East Baltimore owned by Black and Brown people. We seek to build this cooperative community through the reclamation of land, healing, reconnecting and building a base of community power. VOLAR is a nonprofit 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization located in Baltimore, MD, seeking to support local hiring.
The anticipated start date is March 1 2026.
Key Position Responsibilities
This is a representative list of responsibilities
- Manage the preparation, accuracy, relevance and timely distribution of financial reports, presentations and financial information, including monthly status reports.
- Manage the quality and timeliness of reporting to various grantor entities.
- Lead all aspects of AP, AR, and payroll ensuring transaction accuracy.
- Maintain and reconcile balance sheet accounts, including bank reconciliations.
- Create journal entries.
- Balance and verify general ledger accounts associated with Cash Management operations.
- Support a collective process of preparing an annual budget and forecasting.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP.
- Establish, monitor and/or strengthen VOLAR’s internal controls system. Identify, communicate and make suggestions to improve significant deficiencies or weaknesses in VOLAR’s systems and procedures to maintain the integrity of financial information.
- Prepare an annual Form 990 and all reports for the State of Maryland’s Charitable Organizations Division.
- Process Forms W-2, 1099 and other forms relevant to the organization.
- Support the organization’s president on HR issues and actively take part in on-boarding of new hires.
- Maintain complete and accurate vendor, customer and staff records.
Education
Bachelor’s Degree in accounting with financial management-related work experience
Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in non-profit sector
Required experience/qualifications
- Commitment to VOLAR’s mission around building community rooted in healing and wellness
- Effective verbal and written skills with strong interpersonal competencies
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Computer proficiency and experience working with QuickBooks Online, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Docs and other relevant software
- Ability to work some evenings and weekend hours
