The Simsbury ABC Program seeks dedicated Resident Director(s) to join our mission-driven educational community. Since 1973, we've been providing exceptional high school students from underserved communities with the opportunity to attend Simsbury High School and pursue their college dreams. As Director and live-in mentor, you'll be the trusted adult presence who guides 7-9 high-achieving young men as they navigate their path to academic excellence and personal growth.
This unique residential position offers the chance to lead in an environment where students are motivated, talented, and committed to reaching their full potential. You'll create a structured, supportive "home away from home" where high standards meet compassionate guidance, and where your daily presence makes a lasting impact on students' educational trajectories.
Position Start Date: Fall 2026
Key Responsibilities:
Student Development & Mentorship:
- Build trusting relationships with each student, providing daily encouragement and guidance
- Create a warm, family-like atmosphere where students feel safe, supported, and challenged to excel
- Greet students each morning and afternoon, checking in on their wellbeing and daily experiences
- Guide students in setting and achieving personal and academic goals aligned with our college preparatory mission
- Foster a culture of high achievement, mutual respect, and personal accountability
House Leadership & Operations:
- Provide residential supervision and oversight of the ABC House (7-9 students)
- Ensure a structured, well-organized living environment that supports academic success
- Oversee daily operations including meal coordination, transportation, and student schedules
- Ensure students complete daily responsibilities and maintain clean, organized living spaces
- Lead family-style dinners Monday-Friday, building community and connection
Collaboration & Communication:
- Partner with our Resident Academic Advisor to support study hours and academic achievement
- Maintain regular communication with students' parents about progress and wellbeing
- Collaborate with host families, academic advisors, and board members as part of each student's support team
- Serve as guardian contact with Simsbury High School
- Work with the Student Affairs Committee to plan monthly recreational and cultural activities
Program Coordination:
- Coordinate 20 hours of community service per semester for each student
- Plan and chaperone annual educational trip (long weekend to destinations like Boston or Gettysburg)
- Participate in house events and celebrations throughout the year
- Support students in achieving the program's 95%+ four-year college graduation rate
Schedule & Commitment:
- Onsite presence required: approx: 5:00 PM - 7:00 AM weekdays during school year (late August - mid-June)
- At least 2 weekends per month (students spend one weekend monthly with host families)
- Flexible daytime hours ideal for remote workers or those with flexible employment
- Time off during school hours, school vacations, holidays, and designated weekends
- Summer residence available with light maintenance responsibilities

Ideal Candidates:
- Bachelor's degree from accredited institution required
- Must be at least 35 years of age
- Fluent in English
- Warm, approachable communication style with ability to build rapport with high-achieving teenagers
- Strong organizational skills and flexibility
- Experience working with youth, diverse communities, or in educational settings preferred
- Commitment to educational equity and supporting first-generation college students
- Ability to balance high expectations with compassion and understanding
- Comfortable leading in an environment with motivated, academically focused students
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record required
- Must pass background check (criminal, motor vehicle, and safeguarding checks)
