TITLE: Athletics Director
DEPARTMENT: Athletics
REPORTS TO: Director of Operations
FLSA STATUS: Full-time, non-exempt
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Athletics Director plans, implements, supervises and evaluates athletics programs and activities provided by the Club. This position is responsible for all aspects of coordinating the team's practices and play in games: scheduling try-outs, lesson plans, practices, adhering to a game and practice schedule throughout the season, and acting as a positive adult role model, coach, and mentor. This position focuses on growth, development, and the provision of a safe, nurturing, and fun environment for the student athletes they instruct. This position needs to establish authority through leadership, communication, and most importantly patience.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Promote program participation.
- Provide guidance and role modeling to members.
- Effectively implement and administer a physical education program and activities for
- members.
- Ensure the development of appropriate sports curriculum.
- Organize, monitor, and direct group practices, activities, or exercises.
- Maintain the equipment in an orderly condition and assume responsibility for its security.
- Cultivate a healthy and safe environment for members to enjoy and participate in all sports activities.
- Prepare weekly and monthly schedules.
- Submit weekly lesson plans by established deadlines.
- Monitor and evaluate programs, services and activities to ensure safety of members, quality in programs and appearance of the unit at all times.
- Prepare periodic activity reports.
- Teach skills through effectively planned practices at a level appropriate for each member of the team.
- Organize the team's student athletes to participate in games and actively coach them during practice and games.
- Promote positive competitiveness and teamwork among members.
- Assist in coordinating schedules, referees, and leagues.
- Schedule and conduct a pre-season parent orientation and a postseason meeting with the athlete's parents.
- Communicate practice and game schedules with parents - including any changes to the schedule.
- Supervise athletes before, during, and immediately after all practices and games.
- Provide a safe, enjoyable environment for all players, by offering each child the opportunity to participate and demonstrating good sportsmanship.
- Help develop injury prevention methods and evaluate injuries when needed.
- Be able to enforce program rules for specific areas and maintain vigilance of youth at all times.
- Maintain student enrollment and attendance to meet minimum grant requirements and maximum participation throughout the duration of the programs.
- Conduct outreach to promote athletic programming and maximize members participation.
- Develop and maintain a positive relationship with staff, parents, and members.
- Provide safe and efficient transportation for students to and from events.
- Comply with all organization Driver policies and procedures.
- Make sure that every child is wearing their seat belt at all times.
- Observe the speed limit and all road signs and signals during the task of delivering the children safely to their destinations.
- Maintain a current understanding of procedures if an accident should occur with the van, with or without members in the van.
- Keep the van clean and always gassed up, daily safety inspections of van, record the number of miles traveled, and keep any receipts that are related to the trip.
- Oversee special programs and/or events (i.e. Basketball Leagues, Tournaments, Clinics, etc.) and/or participate in the implementation of other activities as directed.
- Participation in special programs and/or events beyond regular hours, including weekends.
- Must attend staff meetings and participate in staff training events.
- Adhere to appropriate dress code and sportsmanship during program activities.
- Establish connections with uniform manufacturers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Internal: Maintain close, daily, contact with Club staff (professional/volunteer), Club members, and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues, explain or interpret guidelines/instructions; instruct, and advise/counsel.
External: Maintain contact as needed with external community groups, schools, member’s parent and other to assist in resolving problems or issues.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- Associate or bachelor's degree in education/kinesiology or closely related field or current enrollment in accredited college or university with credits completed in athletics, physical education/kinesiology or closely related field.
- Must have valid California Class B Driving License if driving Club Vehicle that requires it.
- Must have a clean driving record and abide by all driving protocols and policies.
- Minimum two years of after school program (K-12) and athletics instruction or coaching experience.
- Knowledge of lesson planning and classroom management.
- Knowledgeable in a variety of sports, low organization games, individual/dual activities, including, but not limited to, football, flag football, volleyball, basketball, and soccer.
- Knowledgeable in the fundamental principle of coaching/sports.
- Demonstrated knowledge of youth development, safe and appropriate activities for youth, and understanding of the culture and community in which the Clubhouse is located.
- Ability to work independently, self-starter, enthusiastic, and flexible.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills, deadlines, and detailed oriented.
- Must have access to reliable transportation to arrive at work site at scheduled time consistently.
- Able to work evenings and weekends.
- Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
- Red Cross certification in First Aid & CPR
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Ability to frequently stand, walk, stoop, sit, crouch, bend, speak, and hear.
- Ability to engage in physical activity with student athletes without limitation.
- Ability to lift, carry, pull, or otherwise move objects between 10 and 20 pounds.
