    Jewish Currents is seeking an experienced News Editor to join our news desk, a fast-moving news operation reporting from within the Jewish left. The News Editor will edit news stories and analysis for our website and newsletters.

    The application deadline is Monday, June 15th, with an estimated start date of early August.

    Position

    The News Editor will be part of our news desk team, an agile news operation functioning inside of Jewish Currents. The news desk team publishes news reports and analysis and a regular newsletter. The ideal candidate is a seasoned editor of news and news features with a track record of impactful journalism who can work quickly under deadline pressure, and excels in a fast-paced newsroom environment. Experience working on email newsletters is a plus. We are looking for a candidate who is familiar with the beats we cover, including US politics, left movements, Israel/Palestine, and Jewish communal affairs.

    The News Editor will edit news stories, work with the news desk team to shape news coverage and analysis, help package news stories into a dedicated newsletter, and manage the workflow of the news desk.

    The news desk is a new project at Jewish Currents, and the News Editor will develop its strategy and workflow alongside the News Director. This role is an opportunity to help build an important outlet for the growing Jewish left.

    Who We Are

    Founded in 1946, Jewish Currents is a magazine committed to the rich tradition of thought, activism, and culture on the Jewish left and the left more broadly. We cover a wide variety of topics, including antisemitism and its weaponization, the inner workings of Jewish communal organizations, Israel/Palestine politics on the ground and internationally, race and racialization, strategies and horizons of American left movements, the global rise of the far right, diasporic cultural expression, labor, climate, incarceration, immigration, and feminism.

    You do not have to be Jewish to be right for this job, and we invite applications from candidates from a broad range of backgrounds who are invested in and familiar with our work.

    Responsibilities

    • Edit news stories and analysis
    • Collaborate on conceptualizing stories, commissioning pieces, and guiding strategy for Jewish Currents responsive news and analysis
    • Edit the news desk email newsletters
    • Help package news stories for and develop the voice of a dedicated newsletter
    • Support the management of workflow for the news desk
    • Publish and post stories on our website and send newsletters

    Qualifications

    • 3+ years of experience in a news editing role
    • Experience writing and editing newsletters is a plus
    • Experience in a newsroom is a significant plus
    • Some knowledge of our beats, including left politics, Jewish communal politics, and Israel/Palestine, is a significant plus

    Location and Team Structure

    This position will be part of the news desk team within the broader editorial team. Jewish Currents is currently a primarily remote workplace, with plans to move to a hybrid-style office in New York City in the coming year. This position can be hybrid or remote, and will be working on East Coast hours.

    This is a position covered under the Writers Guild of America, East Collective Bargaining Agreement.

    The compensation for this full-time position is $80,000 or commensurate with experience. We offer a competitive benefits package, including:
