    JOB OVERVIEW

    The Staff Accountant II supports Spirit Rock’s core accounting operations by ensuring accurate financial recordkeeping, payroll processing, and management of cash receipts. This role ensures compliance with accounting standards, internal controls, and company policies while providing timely and reliable financial information. The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in accounting, advanced proficiency in financial systems and Excel, the ability to manage high-volume transactional work with accuracy and attention to detail, and alignment with Spirit Rock’s mission and values.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Payroll & Benefits

    • Process semi-monthly payroll and maintain payroll records, allocations and benefits data.
    • Prepare payroll-related journal entries and reconcile payroll and benefit accounts.
    • Ensure compliance with payroll regulations and resolve discrepancies.

    Revenue / Cash Receipts

    • Process and reconcile cash receipts and transaction reports.
    • Administer merchant services and payment processing systems, including vendor coordination and system improvements.
    • Maintain accounts receivable, deferred revenue and revenue recognition schedules.

    General Accounting

    • Maintain the general ledger, prepare journal entries, and perform account reconciliations.
    • Track and reconcile restricted and unrestricted funds.
    • Support month-end and year-end close processes.
    • Support other projects as requested.

    Financial Reporting & Analysis

    • Prepare financial reports, variance and trend analyses.
    • Support budgeting, forecasting and scenario planning.
    • Assist program and development teams with grant reporting and financial data.

    Compliance, Controls & Documentation

    • Maintain organized, auditable financial records and documentation.
    • Support internal controls and financial policies.
    • Assist with annual audit and tax filings.

    Systems & Process Improvement

    • Use accounting, payroll and other operational systems effectively.
    • Support process improvements and system enhancements.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education & Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and professional experience.
    • Minimum of three years of relevant accounting experience.

    Skills & Competencies

    • Strong understanding of GAAP and fund accounting
    • Solid knowledge of payroll processes, payroll taxes, wage and hour laws and related compliance requirements
    • Proficiency in accounting, payroll and payment processing systems.
    • Advanced Excel skills, including complex formulas, pivot tables and LOOKUP functions.
    • Exceptional attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy.
    • Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism.
    • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to meet firm deadlines.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a diverse and inclusive community.

    Physical Demands:

    • The role involves working at a desk, using a computer, and performing tasks that require prolonged periods of sitting and some repetitive motions.
    • Occasional lifting and carrying files, office supplies, or materials that may weigh up to 5 -15 pounds.
    • The ability to read and review financial documents and reports which may involve reading and reviewing detailed information for extended periods on screens and on paper.

    Employment Status: Full time (37.5 hours/week) / exempt

    Schedule: This position follows a hybrid schedule. During the first six months, the role requires a greater on-site presence (4 days / week) to support onboarding, relationship-building and training. After this initial period, the schedule will transition to a hybrid model with three days per week in the office.

    Compensation: $78,000 - $92,500 Annually, 3 weeks vacation
