    Joyce Uptown Foodshelf (JUFS) is seeking an experienced Food Shelf Manager who has a passion for our mission to feed, nourish, and strengthen our community, and wants to join an innovative and passionate nonprofit team. The ideal candidate will have experience successfully managing high-demand and growing food service programs.

    ABOUT JOYCE UPTOWN FOOD SHELF

    Joyce Uptown Foodshelf is a nonprofit that has been caring for our neighbors in need for more than 55 years. We are supported by individuals, local businesses, and faith communities. The mission of the Joyce Uptown Food Shelf is to distribute food to those in need, with respect and dignity.

    We provide emergency food to families and individuals in South Minneapolis who are experiencing food insecurity. The food shelf provides a shopping experience so families can choose the foods that make sense for their families. We also provide emergency groceries to anyone who needs food immediately. In 2024 JUFS had over 18,000 visits, distributing 1,000,000 lbs of food into the community.

    Joyce Uptown Food Shelf operates Monday - Friday, with occasional evening and weekend hours.

    POSITION SUMMARY

    The Food Shelf Manager oversees the day-to-day functioning of the food shelf, ensuring smooth delivery of food to clients, compliance with food safety standards, effective coordination of staff and volunteers, safety of the food shelf, and facility maintenance. This role is the operational backbone, focused on logistics, service quality, and client dignity. This role supervises the Volunteer Coordinator and Food Shelf Assistant.

    This role also provides leadership among the management staff in the implementation of organizational change strategies and works closely with the Executive Director with shared vision to ensure service implementation that aligns with JUFS values.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field
    • Knowledge of federal, state, local, and facility rules and regulations, including food safety standards
    • Authorization for employment in the U.S. and valid driver’s license (A background check and driving record check are required for this position, but results are not immediately disqualifying.)
    • Experience with service to marginalized and/or historically excluded communities
    • Experience with processes related to recruiting and directing volunteers
    • Experience with food procurement and inventory management
    • Effective experience supervising staff and volunteers, which includes training to develop culturally sensitive support for clients
    • Strong leadership and team building skills
    • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills
    • Experience working in a front-line nonprofit position
    • Proficient in use of relevant computer programs such as Microsoft Office suite, client database, QuickBooks, social media platforms, and Squarespace
    • Excellent customer service skills, demonstrating good judgment, decision-making, negotiation and de-escalation skills
    • Ability to solve problems, take initiative and be resourceful, including working independently and as a team member
    • Spanish language proficiency

    PRINCIPAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

    Client Services

    • Supervise daily food distribution and client intake processes
    • Ensure equitable, respectful, and dignified service delivery
    • Monitor client feedback and adjust procedures to improve experience

    Food Procurement & Inventory

    • Manage food sourcing, ordering, and vendor relationships
    • Oversee inventory tracking, rotation, and waste reduction
    • Ensure compliance with food safety regulations and best practices
    • Oversees and manages the mobile food delivery program and the food rescue program.

    Volunteer & Staff Coordination

    • Recruit, train, and manage the Volunteer Coordinator and Food Shelf Assistant for daily operations
    • Supervise frontline staff and food management volunteers and provide ongoing coaching
    • Foster a culture of inclusivity, teamwork, and accountability

    Facilities & Logistics

    • Oversee daily facility use, cleanliness, and safety protocols
    • Develops, improves, and owns operational SOPs
    • Manage deliveries, storage, and distribution logistics
    • Ensure the maintenance and security of facilities and equipment
    • Report facility improvement needs to the Executive Director

    Compliance & Reporting

    • Maintain accurate records of food distribution and client demographics
    • Ensure adherence to local, state, and federal food shelf regulations
    • Prepare operational reports for the board

    BENEFITS

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    This position must be able to lift, push, and pull as much as to 50 pounds multiple times on a daily basis and be able to climb stairs.
