About Newborn Brain Society
The Newborn Brain Society (NBS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit working toward a world in which every newborn has access to optimal brain care. Founded to close a critical gap in collaboration among the clinicians, scientists, and families who care for newborns at risk of brain injury, NBS advances newborn brain care through international, multidisciplinary collaboration, education, research, and innovation.
Today, NBS serves more than 1,500 members worldwide, hosts an international hybrid conference, delivers year-round educational programming, and supports a growing global community dedicated to improving outcomes for newborns.

About the Role
NBS is hiring an Executive Director to serve as the organization's senior staff leader, overseeing day-to-day operations and working closely with the President and Board of Directors to advance the Society's strategic priorities. This is an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys building relationships just as much as building systems. The Executive Director is supported by administrative and project contractors and is responsible for ensuring that the organization's programs, operations, and member services run effectively.
Responsibilities
Leadership & Governance
- Serve as the primary staff liaison to the President and Board of Directors, including preparing meeting agendas, reports, meeting materials, and follow-up action items.
- Partner with Board leadership to implement strategic priorities and organizational initiatives.
- Provide operational oversight across membership, programs, finance, governance, and organizational communications.
- Supervise and provide direction to NBS contractors and external service providers, including project coordinators, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities, timelines, and deliverables.
- Support and coordinate the work of NBS's standing committees and volunteer leaders.
- Support planning and execution of NBS's annual international hybrid conference (INBBC).
Membership & Community Engagement
- Lead membership strategy, including recruitment, retention, engagement, and member communications.
- Oversee membership database administration and ensure an excellent member experience.
- Build strong relationships with members, volunteers, partner organizations, and key stakeholders.
- Collaborate with Board leadership and committees to identify opportunities to expand NBS's reach and strengthen its professional network.
Financial Stewardship & Strategic Partnerships
- Oversee organizational budgeting and financial operations in collaboration with the Finance Committee and external accounting firm.
- Review financial statements, monitor organizational performance, and support long-term financial planning.
- Cultivate and steward relationships with corporate sponsors, foundations, strategic partners, and other stakeholders that strengthen the Society's mission, educational programs, and long-term sustainability.
Operations
- Identify opportunities to improve operational systems and digital tools.
- Ensure organizational records, policies, contracts, and administrative processes remain organized and up to date.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, business administration, healthcare administration, communications, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
- Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in nonprofit management, association management, healthcare organizations, scientific societies, or other mission-driven organizations.
- Experience overseeing organizational operations, including programs, membership, communications, administration, and financial processes.
- Experience working with a Board of Directors, executive leadership, committees, and volunteer-based governance structures.
- Experience supervising employees, contractors, consultants, or external vendors and managing priorities, timelines, and deliverables.
- Experience managing budgets, reviewing financial statements, and collaborating with accounting professionals or external financial service providers.
- Experience cultivating and managing relationships with corporate sponsors, strategic partners, foundations, or other external stakeholders.
- Experience leading projects from planning through execution, coordinating multiple stakeholders, and ensuring successful completion of deliverables.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing professional communications, reports, presentations, and stakeholder updates.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities in a remote work environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing advisory boards, councils, ambassador programs, or other strategic volunteer engagement initiatives.
- Experience representing an organization with external stakeholders, including healthcare organizations, academic institutions, industry partners, government agencies, or peer associations.
- Experience leading organizational growth initiatives, including membership expansion, strategic partnerships, or new program development.
- Familiarity with medical societies, healthcare associations, neonatal medicine, neuroscience, or related clinical or scientific fields.
Technical Skills
- Experience using membership databases or association management systems (AMS/CRM).
- Experience managing email marketing platforms and digital communications tools.
- Experience maintaining website content through a content management system (CMS).
- Proficiency with Google Workspace, including Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, and shared file management.
- Experience using project management, collaboration, or workflow management tools.
- Proficiency with design and communications tools such as Canva or similar platforms
