Weekend Caretaker at our Brewster, NY Training Center
Detalhes
Descrição
We seek someone who has had experience with colonies of dogs or multiple pet dogs. We have 4 dogs at our center so you'll need to be comfortable managing multiple dogs. Occasionally we will have 5 or 6 dogs.
We seek people who are kind and humane, but consistent and firm with dogs to ensure their successful training. We will guide you in how to care for, and contribute to the progress of our service dog pups in training.
Become part of an organization that performs heartwarming work! We provide service dogs to Veterans with PTSD and people with physical disabilities at no charge. Our current weekend caretaker has worked for us for 2.5 years. We're a great team of dedicated folks working to lift up the lives of both our dogs, and their ultimate person.
You will generally work 2-3 weekends/month (depending on how many there are in the month) - the 2nd, 4th and 5th (if there is one). You will live at our center starting Saturday morning, 9am until Monday morning, 9am. You will sleep at our center Saturday and Sunday nights (comfortable bed, very nice quarters with a full kitchen) so our dogs are not alone overnight.
Timeliness and reliability are essential. You must arrive by 9am Saturday morning to relieve the Weekday Caretaker, and not leave before 9am Monday morning. Attention to detail, and a deep love of dogs are also required.
Our weekend caretaker exercises our dogs (a long bike/walking path right across the street), helps socialize our pups by taking them to stores (grocery, Home Depot mall 3 miles away, etc) under the direction of our trainers, and work on basic obedience which includes house manners, sit/down, etc., loose leash walking, greeting strangers, etc. Our trainers will guide you on how to do this.
You will keep our fenced backyard clear of dog poop by cleanings through the day (we provide a pooper scooper), and occasionally fill in holes the dogs have made (by digging) with new dirt you purchase at Home Depot. (We'll reimburse you for this expense.)
We hold our orientation class for new volunteers the 2nd Saturday of the month (when you're working). You'll be asked to set up folding chairs for the class, move selected dogs into the back portion of the center, and care for those dogs during the 10-11:30am class.
We have a schedule at the center we'll ask you to follow. It's what the dogs are used to. You're given breaks through the day, and in the evenings. You'll walk each dog daily on the bike path across the street from us.
We have our center cleaned professionally twice a month. You will be responsible to keep it clean while you're there and keeping the kitchen immaculate to prevent the dogs from counter surfing.
Ocassionally you may be requested to take a pup to the groomer or the vet. You will be compensated for mileage ($.70/mile).
