    About Us

    Baltimore Green Space is seeking a mission-driven Executive Director to lead its next phase of growth and impact. Baltimore Green Space is a land trust that works to preserve land in Baltimore City. We are distinguished by a focus on community management and engagement in the spaces we protect. Our spaces range from community gardens comprised of a few row home lots to a 54-acre waterfront preserve. Uniquely, we also engage in grant-funded health and environmental research related to urban green space. Baltimore Green Space operates with an annual budget of $1.1-1.3 million, a staff of six, and a working Board of Directors, and has experienced significant revenue growth in recent years.

    The Opportunity

    Join Baltimore Green Space at a pivotal moment as we grow our impact across the city. We are seeking a mission-driven Executive Director (ED) to lead strategy, operations, and fundraising after the retirement of our ED of 12 years. The incoming ED will have the opportunity to hire for key positions to drive the growth of the organization. The organization enjoys a strong reputation among foundation, federal, state and city funders and is poised for growth.

    Key Responsibilities

    1. Management
      1. Direct day-to-day operations including office routines and maintenance of required records and documents
      2. Establish clear lines of responsibility with staff members
      3. Ensure clear communication regarding follow-up and deliverables
      4. Hire and develop new staff members
      5. Oversee all programs and volunteer activities
      6. Oversee grants management including administration and reporting
    1. Mission and Strategy
      1. Act as promoter-in-chief for Baltimore Green Space, be our storyteller
      2. Work in concert with the board on long-range planning
      3. Work toward Land Trust Alliance accreditation
      4. Continue land acquisition and improvement in partnership with key supporters including private foundations, Baltimore City government, the National Fish & Wildlife Service and EPA
      5. Oversee growth of easement holdings
      6. Deepen our partnership with the Baltimore City Department of Housing and Community Development
      7. Guide our forest research partnerships with area university investigators
      8. Prioritize underserved communities in new acquisitions and programming
    1. Financial Performance
      1. Build our individual giving, particularly engaging with large donors and fostering major gifts
      2. Lead the pursuit of foundation and governmental funding, including grant writing and submission
      3. Work with staff and board committees to develop the annual operating budget for board approval
      4. Maintain a working understanding of financial documents, including budgets, cash flow, income statements and balance statements
      5. Oversee creation of 990 tax returns, audits, and compliance
    1. Board Governance
      1. Communicate effectively with the Board
      2. Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors
      3. Staff Land Transaction, Fundraising and Outreach committees with board members / volunteers
      4. Lead long-range strategic planning with the board

    Qualifications

      • At least 7-10 years’ experience in a nonprofit or mission-driven setting, with at least 3 years in a senior leadership role.
      • Demonstrated experience managing organization budgets
      • Prior experience managing direct reports
      • Experience with people management and integration of new hires into a team
      • Demonstrated fundraising and relationship management skills
      • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
      • Knowledge of grant writing, management and reporting
      • Bachelor or above level degree in a relevant field
      • Preferred: Experience in community development, land use, environmental fields; familiarity with Baltimore City

    This position requires occasional evening and weekend work. Final candidates will be subject to a comprehensive background check.

    Compensation

    Salary range: 100,000-130,000 | Benefits: A comprehensive benefits package will be provided and includes health insurance, retirement contributions, paid time off
