    About the Debt Collective

The Debt Collective is an experimental union for debtors. We build collective power to fight for better conditions in our financial lives through the renegotiation and abolition of debts, the public funding of social goods (i.e. education, healthcare, housing), and anti-capitalist and anti-racist economic policies. Our current work includes the national fight for full student debt cancellation and tuition-free higher education, as well as initiatives around medical debt and financialization in healthcare, tenant power, and the role of workers and labor in fighting for debt abolition.

    Overview

The Debt Collective is seeking a Medical Debt Organizer who will be responsible for managing well-run, politically rich organizing calls, building deep member relationships, and supporting high-level issue-based campaign work. This role blends logistics, communications, and digital systems with frontline organizing. The Medical Debt Organizer will be responsible for making sure both in-person and virtual events run smoothly, members are energized and supported, and internal and external systems are tightly aligned.

This position reports to the Medical Debt Team Lead. It is a remote role and requires full-time availability and some travel.

    Responsibilities

    • Build and maintain strong relationships with members and volunteers, including conducting regular one-on-ones, identifying and developing leaders, and running trainings
    • Lead popular education and organizing conversations on calls, making meaningful connections between debt systems, structural issues, and member experiences
    • Share and advance debt analysis in allied organizing spaces, particularly around profit-driven healthcare and health systems, and develop relationships with aligned projects and organizations
    • Organize high-level direct actions that move the needle on campaign work and deepen relationships with and among members
    • Support the team lead on targeted research projects designed to inform and strengthen campaign work
    • Draft promotional emails, texts, and phone scripts to support turnout for events and calls
    • Set up and facilitate engaging virtual meetings and events, ensuring smooth facilitation through preparation as well as technical expertise and stack/chat management

    Qualifications & Skills

    • 5 years of experience in community and/or worker organizing, or in a closely-related field
    • Experience working on issue campaigns
    • Confidence executing strategies for distributed organizing and large-scale mobilizations
    • Skilled relational organizer
    • Experience and success in leading effective teams and developing new leaders
    • Excitement about the Debt Collective’s long-term vision and interest in being part of building and expanding the project
    • Passion for economic justice, interest in the workings of finance capitalism and a commitment to devising and advancing innovative, people-powered ways to transform our economic system
    • Confident and effective project manager
    • Strong communication and writing skills
    • Experience with data-informed online organizing, including multi-channel digital engagement tracking, list segmentation, A/B testing and CRMs; familiarity with EveryAction is a plus
