About Our Roots: Our vision at Our Roots is to build generational mental wellness by and with communities of color impacted by poverty. We do this by virtually connecting pregnant and postpartum communities to peer coaches to promote healing, prevent anxiety and depression. Our 501(c)(3) non-profit is supercharged by philanthropic foundations and individual donors who believe in our mission.

About the Role: Peer coaches are the backbone of Our Roots. You share lived experiences with our communities including parenthood, culture, race, ethnicity, and more, and you will utilize your superpowers to co-create radical shifts in mental wellness for our mamas, birthing parents, and generations to come.

Your role is to offer loving, culturally-reverent, and responsive peer support through weekly virtual check-ins with our community members. At the same time, strong organizational skills and detail-orientation are key as you document and uplift the experiences of our communities, and remain accountable to deliverables. This role is in service of ensuring our mamas and birthing parents experience joy during this often challenging and transformative time in their lives, and of ensuring their children thrive. You will primarily be working with our Black and African American identifying mamas and birthing parents.

Are You a Good Fit?: The following are some of the non-negotiables we feel you’ll need to thrive in this role:

    • You can work 9 to 5 PST on weekdays with some evenings and weekends, as needed.
    • You have a quiet, distraction-free environment to ensure you can be focused and productive during working hours
    • You are emotionally resourced and have a wellness routine that supports your ability to hold space for others
    • You are highly self-motivated, and comfortable working independently in remote teams
    • You have previous experience working in dynamic, startup-like environments

If this sounds like you, we encourage you to read on and apply.

    Your Key Responsibilities:

    Peer coaching:

    • Offer weekly, virtual coaching check-ins with approximately 20 -30 mamas and birthing parents weekly
      • Build a strong relationship and trust with parents
      • Draw from your lived experience, our resource database, and cultural practices to offer tools for healing and wellbeing
      • Organize check-in based on content and timing guidelines offered in onboarding and ongoing training
      • Receive feedback, self-reflect and incorporate supervisory feedback on an ongoing basis to improve your coaching practice
    • Capture the quantitative and qualitative experience of our communities through note-taking during each session, and depression and anxiety screenings in a way that’s supportive, not extractive
    • Building skills of the team by taking an active role in team meetings
    • Building your peer coaching and coaching skills by taking an active part in 1:1s and team meetings

    Your Experience and Skills:

    • You have 2+ years of experience peer coaching ideally in the maternal mental health or mental wellness space
    • You have a Community Health Worker certification and/or 2000+ hours of coaching experience and a willingness to obtain certification
    • You have strong foundational coaching skills such as active listening, paraphrasing and summarizing
    • You are organized, detail-oriented, and can hold yourself accountable to deliverables for the team and community members
    • You are familiar with the needs of pregnant and postpartum individuals, and you have lived experience and/or proximity to the communities we work with
    • You are open to giving and receiving direct and nurturing feedback – you actively integrate this into your coaching practice and way of working
    • You are persistent and can find solutions where others see challenges

    Mindset + Values:

    • You are called to our vision of healing and transformation
    • You hold curiosity and humility, especially when you don’t have all the answers
    • You are excited to learn new tools, systems, and coaching practices
    • You go the extra mile to co-create tools and moments that spark joy and connection
    • You uplift and celebrate cultural practices that exist outside dominant “Western norms”
    • You thrive in evolving environments - you’re flexible, communicative and eager to grow
    • You are well-resourced emotionally to prioritize your mental wellness, lean into hard conversations, and model healthy boundaries

    Interview Rounds & Timeline:

    Round 1 Interviews: Mid-July
